The cuts with Shelby Lynne and Lucinda Williams on this Tony Joe White record are a kick.

Do it Steve. Post the link.

SQ is great on this record.

@noromance

yes, I think it was Steve who posted about RC awhile back. more recent posts were a nice reminder.

@slaw

I like this “Dragons” lp, streaming it now while i get some computer work done. In the past I appreciated Darnielle’s lyrics - literate, interesting, lyrical but I could never say I really appreciated his music or the musicianship of the band. This album seems a little more tuneful than what I remember. Glad to know it’s a favorite of yours. Cool when you can find that.

G’Mornin’/Afternoon Gents,

Some great music being represented here.

+ 1 on the Sibelius No. 2 @bkeske.  I think No. 2 is my favorite large work of his.  He was pretty young too when he made it I believe.  Have always loved it.

+1 on the BLH @slaw are we going to see a follow up from them do you think?

+1 on Story of the Ghost @boxer12  been in heavy rotation here since you and Steve recommended it the other day.

+1 on the Rodney Crowell @noromance .  Someone, I don’t remember exactly who, posted this awhile back and I’ve been diggin it since.  Title song is a really bittersweet nugget for a mixtape.  Strange how some music just flies under one’s radar until something….

well, a great reason to love this thread.

+1 on the Rough Mix @reubent .   I posted about this record a couple months back I think, maybe while you were out riding.  I really like it.  In fact I like it more than most Townsend and all of Lane’s other stuff.  Really interesting how some records get overlooked and stay reasonably priced and others well, records are going through strange days.

Love this thread.

Rejoice!

this is in the general category of ambient music but it’s like nothing I’ve ever experienced.  Original.  Very cool.

@slaw Pine Needle Fire is Randall Blamblett’s latest, just out in fact. It’s a little less R&B than Devil Music and more Peter Gabriel (maybe...).

this is Psyc Country - uses those sort of corn pone Country music tricks but is not stupid like so much Nashville pop country stuff. In fact it’s absolutely great. Nominated for Grammys etc when it came out but I didn’t become aware of it til later. (Familiar story...) For modern production it’s pretty amazing to me. Sounds like the 70s. SQ excellent besides. Highly recommended.
@6t5-GTO Those speakers are simply classic. Congratulations. I’ve heard them praised as such a number of times lately. Very nice.

Voice in the Night

This is such great music made by terrific players and the ECM production sounds very good.
House here is decorated to the nines - seems like for weeks already. Her new thing this year is a remote for the tree. It changes the colors and flash patterns on command.
There are about 50 dolls all around (she calls them “carolers”).

Lately she drops hints about inflatables for the lawn. I have to draw the line somewhere, don’t I?

Cool cover.  Never seen that.  I just have the red one.  Do you think the store promo might sound better?
Greg, + 1 on SWOD.  The best isn’t it.

Also, on the ZZ Top - don’t you love Gibbon’s tone on DeGuello.  I think he got his guitar sounding just how he wanted it on that record.  So tasty.

I agree with you @mammothguy and @slaw - records are a priority.  I have been buying on average more like 2 records a day though.   Trying to make up for lost time I guess...  at $5-25 it was one thing but after just a couple of years it’s $25-125.  So, things will probably change.  I don’t want to whine about it.  I think it’s a great time to live in if you like recorded music.  Funny, I had been thinking lately about priorities in the same way.  What used to be the restaurant money now goes toward hot platters.
Yeah, there are exceptions of course.  A lot of pricing factors but limited supply is not always largest.  It’s interesting to me that it seems like some records are just more treasured for their content - music and SQ.

@tubegb
Please let me add a heartfelt welcome to the thread from a fellow resident of the strange town of Portland.

Aren’t we lucky to have Echo Audio here.  Frequently posting member here  @big_greg shops there too.

Looks like it’s been reissued twice.  Once this year and once last year.  I ordered the latest.  Originals are $300, $100 for last year’s limited edition, and $50 for the latest/current release.

We’re spinning through phenomenal changes in the vinyl market.  (I know I know it’s not news to this group).   Although I’m happy that more people are turning on to vinyl and more new issues are coming out on LP, I definitely have mixed feelings about this tulip bubble happening with record prices - especially older record prices.   I pretty much never sell records and am kinda bummed about having to pay $100 for old records (that were less than $10 two or three years ago) that I want to flesh out and fill in my shelves.  I mean, even high volume popular stuff like the REM noromance mentioned yesterday is going for $100.  Ten times that if it’s Led Zeppelin....  as a buyer my life will need to change.  It’s pretty much no consolation that the value of my album collection is about 10 times higher than it was a couple/few years ago.  Stating the obvious I know.
@Boxer12 & @slaw  I will check out SOTG.  Don’t remember if I’ve heard it.
Thanks for the response Tim.  Very helpful.
@Boxer12,  congratulations on the new cartridge.  Is that a mode SS no longer makes?  If so,  Will they continue to offer to re-tip it at low cost as they do for their other pieces?   I’m curious which cart(s) you changed from to it and what you thought you might be missing that led you to change.
It’s Tim, right?  Yeah. I love Phish.  Only saw/heard them once.  (It was a rural setting and we couldn’t see the stage over the hill and behind the trees).  My daughters used to dance with me on the living room rug to Phish albums.  Their music is fun and evokes good memories.

re:  Ronnie Montrose   I suppose so.  Please don’t take it personally- I know you won’t.  Was going to add that I would normally hesitate to say anything negative about a record because invariably that record will be liked by somebody and people do tend to take/make their music a serious personal matter.  I thought though that the main thing about commenting on the later Montrose stuff is about the phenomenal disappointment.  (I’m certainly not in the minority on this).   It is of course of no consequence whatsoever that somebody else likes albums I have aversion to and vice versa.
I like a lot of the music you post Bro and truly appreciate your taste and recommendations.
Re: Speed of Sound

Ronnie Montrose was a fantastic guitar player who couldn’t get out of his own way. He insisted on writing his own songs and the songs are almost all simply awful.  He insisted on producing and arranging his own records and the production and arrangements are terrible.  Especially the drums.  Keyboards are pure 80s cheese.  To me speed of sound is genius guitar licks over 80s pablum.  It’s essentially unlistenable as music.  Sort of a curiosity as an exercise in guitar technique.  My feelings of disappointment return.  This is a crying shame.  Mental illness is a true bummer.

 @slaw

I’ll listen to it again today with an open mind as much as possible - I’ll try imagining I don’t know who it is.
I’ve had Speed of Sound since it came out, along with all the Group albums and most of the Solo and Gamma stuff.  I remember that back when it came out, like with much of his post Hagar work, I felt it was admirable but on balance a disappointment.  Nevertheless, I’ve held on to it and will revisit it today with an open mind.  @slaw  Perhaps he never got his due because of people like me who, although full of admiration and the greatest enthusiasm for his early stuff didn’t appreciate a guy who was clearly a singular talent as a player but didn’t accept the idea of the importance of writing songs that fit other people’s taste (popular or otherwise).
