Gotta take a break to watch the Berlin Philharmonic live. Then, my second arrival will be cued-up. And I can’t hardly wait for that one either.
I’ve never had it on vinyl Steve. This is the absolute best I’ve ever heard it. The tonality, details, and subtlety in this album really shine on vinyl. And hopefully my rig is doing it justice as well.
Interesting Joel. Good luck with your evaluation. But I’m with you, I also prefer nice slam and punch. It is interesting that the Hagerman tube pre offered more of that (but then, that was vs the Mani, so let’s get real 😁 )….but ultimately still running through the Belles 400A. As they say, it all gots to work together with a synergy you prefer.
This is becoming a ‘Second Spin Saturday’ for me.

Via @slaw whom I am very appreciative

Joni Mitchell - Blue. Reprise reissue Specialty Pressing
Just arrived today…one of two…

Cowboy Junkies - The Trinity Session. RCA 1988

Looks to be in near mint condition…dropping the needle…

Oh damn, this sounds great
Installed my mono cart….it’s been a while.

Bruno Walter conducts Bruckner - Te Deum & Mahler - Kindertotenlieder (Songs On The Death Of Infants). Columbia Masterworks 1955 Mono
Sviatoslav Richter Plays Rachmaninoff Concerto No. 1 w/State Radio Orchestra of the U.S.S.R., Kurt Sanderling Conductor & Saint-Saëns Concerto No. 5 “The Egyptian” w/Moscow Youth Symphony Orchestra, Kiril Kondrashin Conductor. Monitor Records 1957. Mono
Second spin for this….

Richard Thompson - 13 Rivers. New West Records 2018

The Sundays - Reading, Writing And Arithmetic. Geffen reissue, 180g, 2018, originally 1990

Well, Steve, it’s all very subjective…..but….when I first played this, it seemed very dark and heavy as it started. But After getting 1/2 to 3/4 the way through it the first time, it ‘opened-up’ and felt like a nice broken-in pair of comfy shoes. The recording is actually very nice. Intimate, but with a lot of depth and nice sound staging. And of course, there is Richard’s writing and guitar playing. I will say that his guitar playing seems to me to take a ‘back seat’ on this album. Concentrating more on song writing and delivery perhaps. Don’t get me wrong, Richard still plays well, and it is showcased when need be.

Second time around, I’m liking it even more. Very strong effort IMO. This could become a favorite.

Shoot man, I picked this up for $21 shipped for a 2LP set. What isn’t to like? It’s Richard Thompson.

@sbank

Great album! Saw him play it live unaccompanied.

Yep Spencer, last night was one of those nights, everything sounded incredible, including Still. I really like Richard’s guitar playing on that LP. Great recording.

Spurred me to purchase Electric last night on Discogs, new and sealed.

Budapest String Quartet - Beethoven: The Six Quartets, Op. 18. Columbia Odyssey 3LP box set reissue 1969, originally 1959 (originally recorded in 1951). Mono

Wonderful performances.
Szell conducts Tchaikovsky - Variations On A Rococo Theme For ’Cello And Orchestra In A Major, Op. 33 & Weber - Overture To "Der Freischütz" / Overture To "Oberon". New York Philharmonic. Columbia Masterworks 1952 Mono

This is one of those mono recordings you kinda shake your head and wonder why it sounds so good, almost stereophonic. The good ones (mono) do that.

@tomic601

oh Brian , I remember playing that Gabriel for the first time on the KEF 105.2…. fun….

Might be my favorite Gabriel solo release. But, I find most of them to be a bit inconsistent in regards to SQ.

Side 2 will have to wait, as I forgot the Berlin Philharmonic is on live, so a bit of a break to watch them.

Eugene Ormandy conducts Beethoven - Concertos 2 & 4 For Piano And Orchestra. The Philadelphia Orchestra w/Rudolf Serkin.  Columbia Masterworks 1955 Mono

@noromance

@bkeske +1 Budapest String Quartet 1951.

Finishing the last LP this morning. Started too late last night. A very nice set I’ve been wanting to spin recently, but have been too lazy to interrupt my stereo playing and install the mono cart (as if it takes more than a few minutes 😄 )
Szell conducts Brahms - Brahms: Concerto No. 2 In B-Flat Major. The Cleveland Orchestra w/Leon Fleisher. Epic 1962 Mono

I also bought this in a stereo version. I think I like this better.

Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance. Fire Records reissue/remaster 2018, originally 1978

Soundsmith mounted again…back to stereo…

In a homage to Mothers Day 😉

Szell conducts Strauss - Symphonia Domestica. The Cleveland Orchestra. Columbia Masterworks 1964

R.E.M. - Fables Of The Reconstruction / Reconstruction Of The Fables. I.R.S. Records 1985

Just went through many LP’s being sold by a favorite classical seller on eBay. A nice chunk of change, so closed my browser to think about it…..yea right….I’ll probably pull the trigger as soon as I’m done listening to this.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, this is an incredible album. Been on my mind all day.

Ahmad Jamal - Live At The Montreal Jazz Festival 1985. Atlantic 1986

Damn, it kicks butt.

Well, as I figured, got done with Ahmad, went upstairs, and offers sent to my eBay classical LP junkie. I’m pretty sure he will accept.

Rozhdestvensky conducts Shostakovich - ‘From Manuscripts Of Different Years’ : Scherzo For Symphony Orchestra In F Sharp Minor, Op. 1 / Theme And Variations For Symphony Orchestra In B Flat Major, Op. 3 / Scherzo For Symphony Orchestra In E Flat Major, Op. 7 / ‘All Alone’, A Suite Of Music To A Film, Op. 26 / Six Romances To Lyrics Of Japanese Poets, Op. 21. Pretty darn nice

Second spin for this….

Norah Jones - LIVE ….Til We Meet Again. Blue Note 2LP gatefold 2021
Yep, seems it’s been quiet the last couple nights. I was checking in while spinning CD’s and very few posts.

Gotta say, mine is sounding pretty good as well. After spinning silver discs, it never ceases to amaze how much better my vinyl rig sounds.

Gunnar Bucht : Komponist I Sverige - Dramma Per Musica / Hund Skenar Glad / Symfoni Nr 7. Sveriges Radios Symfoniorkester w/ Radiokören conducted by Stig Westerberg & Norrköping Symphony Orchestra conducted by Okko Kamu. Caprice Records 1975, Swedish release.

A couple new LP’s arrived today….this one an old new one…in fantastic shape

Leo Kottke - Dreams And All That Stuff. Capitol 1974
Have had this on CD for years, then saw this new reissue, and jumped on it…

The Oscar Peterson Trio - We Get Requests. Verve reissue 2019, originally 1964.

…..wow, this sounds great on vinyl. But then, most albums do.
Another new reissue I just got today.

Richard and Linda Thompson - Hokey Pokey. Island reissue 2020, originally 1975.
I have a feeling he is busy with business Steve. He hasn’t posted anything on the Vandersteen forum for a while either, and he is a fairly routine contributor there….about the same time he last posted here.

Thought about texting him to make sure everything was OK.
