@uberwaltz - There’s no accounting for (personal) taste. ;~)
"Welcome to the Real World" has been relegated to the (to trade) pile. Agreed, "Broken Wings" and "Kyrie" were decent enough pop songs, but not good enough to live in my record rack.
Still working on the culling. I’ve freed about 90 records from captivity, so far. Still got a ways to go......

Mr. Mister - "Welcome to the Real World" (go)
Steve Nardella - "It's All Rock & Roll" (go)
Oingo Boingo - "Nothing to Fear" (stay)
Funny guys. "Heavy Weather" is in my "to play" pile too. Now, if I can just get done with my culling, maybe I'll play it.....
@uberwaltz - PM me your address..... |
Our Daughters Wedding - "Moving Windows" (go)
I guess I must have liked synthesizers in the early '80s. Not so much now.....
Robert Palmer - "Some People Can Do What They Like" (go)
@tomic601 - In times like these, I have to make the tough choices. I have to cut deep, to make room for new records that are more deserving, but never had the chance...... Unfortunately, "Spring Session M" did not make the cut. It's previous space on the record rack will be filled by a younger, more talented record, that will hopefully stand the test of time. "Spring Session M" only lasted 38 years.......
Robert Palmer - "Secrets" (go)
Shawn Phillips - "Spaced" (go)
@tomic601 - Thanks Brother!
Jean-Luc Ponty - "Imaginary Voyage" (stay)
@uberwaltz - I'm actually listening to most of the records I'm culling. It's time consuming and I hope it is worth the effort. Just did a better count regarding how many records will actually fit on my shelves. Seems like I can only get about 520 records inside the shelf. Would like to get down to that number and keep it that way. Might have one "milk crate" sitting beside the rack for overflow/in-process/in-coming. The shelves are modified IKEA and I can always add to it if needed. Each 2 section piece can hold an additional 130, but I don't really want to add more.
I've also got about 1500-2000 CDs and I rarely listen to them anymore. I'm going to cull them down to only a hundred or so of rare/favorites and sell the rest. I'll use the proceeds to help fund a streamer and Qobuz. Might even venture into Roon. From there, we'll see if I can live without Spotify Premium. That's a tough one, because I really like Spotify. Wish the sound quality was CD quality, or better.
Somehow, over time, I became a pack rat and I'm not happy or proud if it. I'm really trying to simplify my life and de-cluttering is a good start. |
Jean-Luc Ponty - "Cosmic Messenger" (go)
Really a pretty good record if you like late ’70’s Jazz/Rock Fusion, ....with a violin! Ponty is a master and Joaquin Lievano plays a mean guitar. I saw Ponty live shortly after this record came out and he put on a good show. Anyway, somehow I ended up with 2 copied, both in mediocre condition. I think I’ll let them both go. If I ever see a really clean copy for a fair price, I may pick it up again.
Mountain - "Climbing" (stay)
Hand-me-down from my late sister. Crap condition, but it has sentimental value, so it stays. Forever....
System 56 - "Beyond the Parade" (go)
Funny, I remember buying this record in Berea, Ohio in 1982. Local synth new wave band from Cleveland. I bought it because I had heard them on the radio a time or two and I liked the cover art. Anyway, took it home, played it, didn't like it, and it sat on my various different record racks for 38 years, until I pulled it out today and played it for only the second time in it's life. I still don't like it......
For giggles, I looked it up on Discogs. Seems it could fetch $50+ in the condition it's in. I might be submitting my first ad on Discogs........
Suzi Quatro - "Suzi...and Other Four Letter Words" (go)
@uberwaltz - Glad you got it, hope you enjoy it.
@boxer12 - I had completely forgotten "Piss Aaron". Now I haven't......
@big_greg - It's a keeper. Although I could have done without side II (record I, side II). If that were the whole album, it would be outta here. But the other 3 side make it a keeper.
@uberwaltz - Good man! Be strong. Rock on! Might as well pass them on to someone who will enjoy them.
I've got about 90 (so far) that are off my shelf in the trade pile and deep storage pile. There are some that I simply cannot git rid of, even if I know I'll never listen to them. Most of those have sentimental value, mostly family hand-me-downs, or stuff from my childhood. I'm going to put those in a separate crate and place them on a shelf in the basement utility room.
So, since starting my culling last summer, I think I'm down about 150/200 total LPs. Almost done. But it will be an on-going battle keeping the number down to the approx. 520 that fit in my record rack.
Now, to get on the 1500/2000 CDs I've got on the shelf and in storage bins....... |
Got a few more days of culling. On the block tonight:
Todd Rundgren - "Something/Anything?"
Double record, so it's going to take a while to come to a decision....
@boxer12 - I love "Spike". I'm a big fan of EC. "Spike" is in my top 3-4 favorites of his albums. Favorite is probably "All This Useless Beauty". |
@slaw - That Linda Ronstadt record came out when I was a senior in High School. Linda Ronstadt was "The $hit" back at that time, and for good reason. What a voice. And covers of Elvis Costello and Warren Zevon to boot.
That record still graces my LP rack, even after The Big Purge.
Todd Rundgren - "Initiation" (go)
Interesting disclaimer printed on the inner sleeve of the album. Check it out:
"Technical Note: Due to the amount of music on this disc (over one hour), two points must be emphasized. Firstly, if your needle is worn or damaged, it will ruin this disc immediately. Secondly, if the sound does not seem loud enough, try re-recording the music onto tape. By the way, thanks for buying the album"
Amazingly, the album sound exactly as you would expect, considering the disclaimer. Thin, with no bass. |
The culling continues......
Jean-Luc Ponty - "Live" (go) |
Carly Simon - "Spoiled Girl" (go)
Return to Forever - "No Mystery" (go)
I must have liked this kind of music at one time (late 70’s, early 80’s), but I don’t now....... |
@slaw - Did anyone claim the Jenny and Johnny album? If not, I would love to have it. Listening to it right now on Spotify.....
Sparks - "In Outer Space" (stay)
Not serious music. Just fun. Almost makes me want to dance. Almost.......
@slaw - Thanks Brother! I'll PM you. |
@tomic601 - How's that Mofi of "Planet Waves? Good record. Mine's old, and not quite perfect......
R.E.O. Speedwagon - "R.E.O. T.W.O."
John Waite - "No Brakes" (stay)
I won't call this a great album. But it was a pretty good pop rock album in its day. Mine's super clean, so I'll hold onto it. Probably not worth anything as a trade-in anyway. |
Thompson Twins - "Lies" 12" 45 RPM Single/EP (stay)
Very good sound quality! Loved this music back in the day. Still do........
Thompson Twins - "In the Name of Love" Promo
@tomic601 _I'll have to go check my collection of ticket stubs to see if I saw that same REO tour. I did see them around that time, at Rupp Arena in Lexington, KY. Weird, but I've never seen a show at either of the arenas in Dayton. I have seen a bunch of shows at Fraze Pavilion in Kettering. Great smallish outdoor concert facility.One of my favorites.
@slaw - That Marc Cohn record is outstanding.
All this culling, typing, listening and that 6 hours of skiing this afternoon has me worn out. I'm outta here. Enjoy the night everyone.
Jean-Luc Ponty and Stephane Grappelli - "Inner City"
This album was in a hand-me-down crate from a friend of my wife. Not sure I've ever listened to it before. Anyway, I'm enjoying it more than I expected I would. |
The Orwells - "Disgraceland"
Another one from the hand-me-down crate.....
Carly Simon - "No Secrets" (go) - Unlistenable condition.....
Andreas Vollenweider - "Caverna Magic" (...Under the Tree - In the Cave...) (keep)
Kind of New Age(ish), but excellent SQ. Not something I will listen to often, but interesting background music.
Vangelis - "China" (go)
Sounds like a film score. Not diggin' it....
Vangelis - "Heaven and Hell" (go)
I bought this record a long, long time ago, around 1978/9. Not sure why. Not sure how I had ever even hear of it (I was a rocker, not a "whatever this is"). Anyway, I've held onto it for a long time, but it's time to let it go. Just doesn't do anything at all for me, except one cut. And that one is a doozie. If you like Jon Anderson, check out this cut from "Heaven and Hell"
Vangelis (featuring Jon Anderson) - "So Long Ago, so Clear"

Well, I for one am very glad to see this thread, or mainly a small group of music lovers that have stayed the coarse and have grown very much lately, into a much larger group. Very Cool!
Agreed 100%. Very cool! |
