@mammothguy54
Thanks man, (and Steve), and I agree, both with the fun of adding, but also watching the budget. Fingers crossed that this stage performs as well as I’ve heard from those who own one. If it does, it could very well be an ‘end game’ component. And also allows me to venture into a high quality MC cart in the future....mmmmm....see? you are right, it never stops....😄 |
Boulez conducts Berlioz - Symphony Fantastique. The London Symphony Orchestra. Columbia Masterworks 1971
And thank you @grey9hound. This isn’t the Reference, but the new model introduced late last year. Jim thought he got very very close to the Reference for a fraction of the cost. |
Lorin Maazel conducts Rimsky-Korsakov - Night On Bald Mountain & Ravel/Mussorgsky - Pictures At An Exhibition. The Cleveland Orchestra. Telarc 1979

|
Szell conducts Two Musical Fables : Kodály - Háry János Suite & Prokofiev - Lieutenant Kijé Suite. The Cleveland Orchestra. Columbia Masterworks 1970

|
@spiritofradio Will you save on shipping cost by picking it up directly from the factory?
Lol, I wish, as Jim makes his stuff high above and looking over Honolulu 😁 Luckily Jim sends everything shipping included, and no tax. Which was a nice surprise. But yes, I may now think of adding an MC cart into the fold, eventually. At least I know I will be able to with a capable phono stage. Regardless, I might be very surprised how much better my Zephyr (and the whole rig) sounds with this phono stage. |
Zubin Mehta conducts Saint-Saëns. Symphony #3. Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. London 1971 |
@tomic601 Brian - congrats on the Hagerman, another dead Wabbit !!!! indeed, but that dead rabbit left his holes to explore |
Joni Mitchell - Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter. Asylum 2LP set 1977
Screwing with my subs locations and settings (have some bad bass accumulation in one corner, particularly), and this is a good album to check things out. Plus, it’s one of, if not my fav, from Joni. |
Szell conducts Brahms Piano Concerto #2. The Cleveland Orchestra with Leon Fleisher, piano. Columbia/Odyssey 1973 |
Prague String Quartet Performs Dvořák - String Quartets No. 8 & No. 10. Deutsche Grammophon, guessing mid-70’s. German release.
Wonderful |
@slaw Don’t know about you Brian, but mostly when I make a significant upgrade, I find reviewing my sub settings is necessary. Of course my room is small so any change is noticed easily. Don’t we ‘fuss with stuff’, just because? 😁 Actually I watched Steve Gutenberg this morning, and he was discussing this. Recommended a ‘tone generator’ for the phone (I usually use Vandertones for this) and I found one. Pretty cool really. but, to my astonishment, I found one of my rear corners was collecting low waves at about 10-15 db Above anywhere else at about 50db. And was also over-taking the center between the speakers. So, as I have two subs hooked in stereo, moved the one across from that bad corner build-up out and away from that speaker. Not perfect, but it reduced the build-up by a significant amount. Obviously, that could be creating a ‘muddy’ bass filled center, and rear room reflections. Interestingly, my sweet spot was not so much effected, and pretty neutral, but we also hear all those others sounds bouncing around us, good and bad. Not perfect, as only a true bass trap would fix that corner, but much more neutral across the spectrum now. Had to find something to fool around with, it’s the weekend 😁 |
@slaw Now with accessories, there's a wanting to see if an improvement can be had. For me, if I have a strong feeling that I'm missing something, I think it's more than "just because">😅 Yep, as soon as I get the Hagerman, I’ll be tempted immediately to tube roll, as I’ll be thinking I’m missing something better even if it blows my socks off with the ‘stock’ tubes. |

@tomic601
Not sure you were aware of, or knew who Michael Stanley (Michael Stanley Band) was when you were growing up in NW Ohio, but he passed away today at 72. Sadly, he had many medical issues over the last few years. ‘The’ local Cleveland rock legend is gone (some Joe Walsh fans may take issue with that moniker). Kinda hard to believe. Damn, I’m getting old. |
@tomic601 I don’t mean this badly just that a scene can be restrictive.... No offense taken. Personally I was more a James Gang fan for local Cleveand ‘rockers’, and later Pere Ubu. Never really understood the incredible attraction he and his band had. But, Michael *was* a good guy, loved everything Cleveland, (thus his loyal local following), was more than happy to be in that ‘restrictive’ Cleveland scene, and never left it. Became a DJ for WNCX classic rock station for years. |

@spiritofradio Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5 in Eb Major Vladimir Ashkenazy The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Sir Georg Solti As a member of the Berlin Philharmonic/Digital Concert Hall, I watched them live yesterday perform the ‘Emporer’ concerto. Paavo Jarvi conducted, Igor Levit, piano. A wonderfully done performance of that concerto. I checked, and of all the Solti I have, don’t have him conducting that piece. |
Wolfgang Sawallisch conducts Schubert - The Complete Symphonies. Staatskapelle Dresden. Philips 5LP box reissue 1972, originally 1967

@rcprince I've been going through a Beethoven Symphony box I didn't realize I had, the 1963 von Karajan cycle with the Berlin Philharmonic. Last few nights I've listened to symphonies 1-5 and 7; tonight it's symphony 6 and perhaps 8. I can see why many feel that this cycle is among the top performances of the works. I have that cycle on vinyl too, (and two others on vinyl). Karajan’s 63 cycle is almost unanimously thought to be his best Beethoven cycle. It is a very nice set, but I do have a soft spot for my Szell cycle with the Cleveland Orchestra. And also have one with Bohm and the Wiener Philharmoniker. That also has a charm of its own.
The only cycle I have on CD is more modern by Paavo Jarvi and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. Although very good, I think I prefer the three sets on vinyl above. |
@rcprince Have you found the subscription worth it? Absolutley. I just started my third year, and do not hesitate re-upping. In terms of getting it on your TV, I use Roku’s throughout the house (I have no cable), but also all my TV’s are ‘smart’ Samsung’s. All Roku’s and my Samsung’s have the Digital Concert Hall app for download. Easy peasy in full surround sound if you desire and have the equipment, which I do. I’m sure an Amazon Firestick, Apple TV units, etc. probably have the app as well, along with other ‘smart’ TV included apps. I bet if you go to their web site, they might have additional info. |
@spiritofradio Can one see a recording, do you know? They usually post recordings of the previous live performances within 4-5 days (IIRC). Then yes, you can watch a recording of it. All live recordings are put in the archives. Not sure what your certificate allows, but I would assume it includes live or archived recordings. A non-member person have very limited access to the archives, and typically the most recent performances are not included. Berlin/Digital Concert Hall’s archives are really vast, including quite a few of those old Karajan conducted performances. At $160ish a year, it is really a bargain when you consider what 2 tickets to one concert for the Cleveland Orchestra would cost (or similar). |
@spiritofradio @big_greg @big_greg +1 on Sugarloaf. Love that record. Wow. Are you guys talking about Sugarloaf from the early 70’s? I have Spaceship Earth, their second album. Haven’t spun it in years....may have to go find it. |
Had to swap in my mono cart....

Damn, this is a wonderful mono recording. |
@noromance @bkeske +1 the Elgar. That is a really nice LP. Elgar is relaxing. Not complex in the least, just entertaining music. |
Very interested in this one which arrived today.
No conductor, just ‘Members of the Berlin Philharmonic’ and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, baritone - Fauré, La Bonne Chanson / Ravel, Chansons Madécasses / Poulenc, Le Bal Masqué. HNH reissue 1977, originally 1976.
Vinyl looks pristine, hopefully it plays the same. |

Neville Marriner
Have that box, wonderful indeed. 👍

Well, still have the mono cart on the SOTA, so going to spin some of my mono vinyl this evening. It’s been a while.
This album I have I listened to once. I think it’s a fairly common feeling that not all great conductors are necessarily great composers. And, I wasn’t impressed the first time I listened to this, but, decided to try it again.

How do you like that Scriabin set? I have that, cannot remember if you asked for a recommendation. I don’t play it often, but find it very nice indeed.
Also that Franck. I only have spun it once, but IIRC, enjoyed it. Lot.

Thanks James, just got notified it will be here next Tuesday. 11 day turn around from ordering. Not too bad, especially coming from Honolulu. Yes, the phono stage was my last piece to the phono rig. The Mani with LPS has done its job nicely, but I have a feeling it will be, (as it was when I put together the SOTA/Jelco/Soundsmith), like playing my albums for the first time. Again. |
@spiritofradio Solti-Edition Vol.9
Fantastic. I have Volumes 6 & 10, and have my eyes peeled constantly for 8 & 9. |
