Earl Scruggs and The Earl Scruggs Revue - Live at Kansa State. Columbia 1972.

Grateful Dead - History of the Grateful Dead Vol. I. Recorded live at the Fillmore East in 1970. WB 1973

The Flying Burrito Brothers’ album The Gilded Palace of Sin. The common wisdom regarding that album and The Byrds Sweetheart Of The Rodeo (the last with Chris Hillman and Gram Parsons, who thereafter left to start TFBB) is that neither found an audience

Interesting you bring up the Flying Burrito Brothers. I could have sworn I had a couple of their albums. But after opening up my long time boxed LP’s, none to be found. Used to listen to them a lot back in the day.

Sweetheart in the Rodeo really is a great album with wonderful SQ. And John Hartford playing banjo on many tracks is a real bonus. Hartford is another musician I have to get some LP’s back in my collection. Aereo-Plain was one of my favorite albums.

Also, need to find some Commander Cody as well. Never had any of those albums myself, but many of my friends did. Really fun stuff.

@noromance

I hear you, Brian. Guess I won't be buying that Durand tonearm after all!

Well Brian, I’m glad I bought those mono blocks before doing my taxes. I probably would have hesitated 😁

@bslon

Canned Heat has always been a fav of mine. I need to get the whole collection, and working on it, only have 3 rights now. 2 of which I've had since the mid-70's.

Great band, but when The Bear, Bob Hite, died, that was pretty much the end. At least for me.

Larry Taylor, on bass, also recorded extensivly with John Mayall, another fav from that time.

But, I tell'ya, that Butterfield Blues Band Album I have just kicks serious butt too. The SQ is really really good. I really need to dig in and find some others from them, or, some other albums Paul Butterfield released. If that album is any indication, they did a splendid job recording and engineering their albums.

Sir Adrian Boult conducts Vaughan Williams - Symphony #6 & The Lark Ascending. New Philharmonia Orchestra W/Hugh Bean, violin. Angel 1967
#2 to arrive today...

Joni Mitchell - Hejira. Asylum 1976

Magical. Jaco’s first with Joni. He added so much to this and her next 3 albums.
Tooba Blooze - S/T. I Wanna Records 1990.

Stumbled across this in my racks. Saw this band live at a small club. Impressed, bought their LP being sold at the show.

Haven’t played this in years. Fun stuff.

Szell conducts Bartók - Concerto For Orchestra & Janáček - Sinfonietta For Orchestra, Op. 60. The Cleveland Orchestra. Columbia Masterworks 1966

Heifetz - Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with Reiner and The Chicago Symphony. RCA Red Seal repress in stereo, probably from the late 60’s. Originally 1957.
Sir John Barbirolli Conducts Vaughan Williams - Introduction And Allegro For Strings, Op. 47Serenade In E Minor, Op. 20, Fantasia On A Theme By Thomas Tallis & Fantasia On "Greensleeves". The Sinfonia Of London & The Allegri String Quartet. Angel reissue, date unknown, but per label, 1980’s. Originally 1963.

Another wonderful recording....or else my rig is just sounding exceptionally good today 😁
Nicanor Zabaleta - Works for Harp and Orchestra. Jean Martinon conducting Orchestre National De France. Deutsche Grammophon 1970, German pressing.
Edouard Van Remoortel conducts Grieg - Holberg Suite, Wedding Day At Troldhaugen, Op. 65, No. 6 , Lyric Suite, Op. 54 & Norwegian Dances, Op. 35. Bamberger Symphoniker. VOX, reissue and remastered for stereo, 1970. Originally 1956 in mono.

First time I spun this, I wasn’t happy with the overall recording quality, perhaps poorly done from mono to stereo. But, giving it another shot.
@spiritofradio

High and bright on a rare sunny Saturday.

lol, I think you are correct.

Sibelius
Symphony No. 1
from the big blue box of:
Berliner Philharmoniker
Symphonies 1-7
Simon Rattle
2019

@bkeske, Dude! This is the one!

Dynamics, Clarity, Precision, True

This makes me think I’m beginning to know the difference between orchestras. This band is definitely north of greatness.

Very nice. I’m very familiar with Berlin, and Simon’s time with them. I’ve had a subscription to their streaming service (Digital Concert Hall), including live concerts, for 3 years now. This coming will be my 4th. Excellent orchestra. Weird, but I probably know them better than Cleveland because all the time I ‘spend with them’.
@spiritofradio

@bkeske Joni & Neil, you are into classical Brian.

Classical in all forms James ;-)

......actually bought a batch of ‘actual classical’ LP selections today. Oh, and a CD. Purcell and Britten selections by the Doric String Quartet on Chandos (2 CD set). Listened to it on TIDAL and had to have it.
Yea, sad indeed. Damn cancer.

Got to see Chick and Pat Metheny play at a bar, of all places, in Columbus (German Village area) back in the late 80’s. Fun evening, and found myself very lucky to see both of them in such a intimate setting.

God speed Chick.

New acquisition arrived today...

Leo Kottke - Mudlark. Columbia reissue, probably 1972. Originally 1971.

Another vinyl in fantastic shape.

Members of The Vienna Octet :

  • Britten - Sinfonietta, Op. 1
  • Hindemith - Octet (1957–58)

London, London Treasury Series 1976 reissue, originally 1965

Can’t believe I finally put a wayward album together with a wayward cover today while reorganizing some albums. Had the cover, no album. Put the album in the shelves without its cover, but couldn’t figure out what it was. Well, turns out the album cover, and song list, don’t match the album and the song list on the label. I remember that now, but not when I was trying to figure out where the other half of each went, lol.

And, it turns out this is worth a bit on today’s market.

The Warlocks - S/T. Otherwise known as the Grateful Dead a couple years later. Recorded in 1965. My copy is on the Creative Music label, and came out in 1980, but there are a couple other versions on other small labels. Covers are essentially the same for each.

Anyway, since I finally remarried the vinyl and cover, thought I’d spin it....

Another acquisition that arrived in the mail today....

Sir Neville Marriner conducts Bach - The Art of Fugue. Academy of St. Martin-In-The-Fields. Philips 2LP box set. European pressing 1975.

Close to mint condition, - except-  the old foam dividers disintegrated (removed at one time) in the box and some material got on/embedded two sides in a couple small areas, so I did some careful cleaning to remove as best I could. Hopefully it all plays through well. I’ve heard some very good things about this set.

The Sundays - Reading, Writing And Arithmetic. Geffen/UMG Reissue 2018, originally 1990

OK, after a return to some of my digital collection, back to some vinyl (and can’t wait to do so). Haven’t listed to this for a while, and always a favorite of mine, as it was recorded very nicely. Will go through the entire collection.

I also, finally, signed-up for a photo service, so, will be including more photos in the future.

The Classics Record Library 1975 4LP box.

One of my favorite sets. Been sitting around not getting any attention....

Szell conducts Brahms - The Four Symphonies. The Cleveland Orchestra. Columbia Masterworks 3LP set 1967
Ya know, Bruckner is one composer I’ve never been able to warm up to, albeit I do try....so, I’ll always take Brahms before Bruckner ;-)

@spiritofradio

It’s a real hidden gem James. Glad you like it too, and glad I stumbled across it myself.

Sir Charles Mackerras conducts Voříšek - Sinfonia In D & Dvořák - Czech Suite, Op. 39. English Chamber Orchestra. Philips 1972 Netherlands release

František Vajnar conducts Martinů - Concertino For Cello, Wind Instruments, Piano And Percussion. Collegium Musicum Pragense

Supraphon 1977 Czechoslovakian release

@spiritofradio

Apparently Brahms himself didn’t care for Bruckner much.

Yes James, as I understand Brahms said Bruckner’s work was ‘unlistenable’.

@whatsaftumch

👍🏼 Won’t get much argument in this thread, it’s primarily about the music. We just got smitten with how well it can be reproduced. And wherever we are on that journey, all are welcome here 😉
