Was sitting listening to a recent Neil Young interview/podcast on YouTube, made by Broken Record (look it up, it’s worth a listen)….really fun stuff, but now I’m itching to listen to music, so will go back to that later….so….what else?…

The Music of Arnold Schoenberg, Volume I. Robert Craft conducting; The Washington Opera Society, The CBS Symphony, The Columbia Chamber Ensemble, & The Columbia Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Columbia Masterworks, 2 LP box set, reissue from the early-mid 70’s, originally 1962. |
@spiritofradio Elgar Cello Concerto/Enigma Variations Jacqueline du Pré - Daniel Barenboim +1 A highly rated album that I do not own. Will add it to my wish list. - will be watching Barenboim live with the Berlin Philharmonic tomorrow, conducting Smetana’s “Ma vlast” |
@spiritofradio Brian. I may sign up for a trial so I can catch that. I have a Ma Vlast On direct to disc. Love that music. Go for it. They do a nice job with their streaming production. It’s been a bit rough this season with the pandemic, but finally allowing a partially filled hall and more complete orchestral programs. I got hooked, so have been a member for two years now, and rarely miss a performance live. Really not a bad deal when I consider what one good ticket costs for a single symphony performance at Severance Hall, of my beloved home town Cleveland Orchestra. |
Just saw that Jerry Jeff Walker passed away at 78. R.I.P. Used to listen to a fair amount of Jerry back in the 70’s, and really enjoyed his music. |

Karajan conducts Brahms - The Four Symphonies. Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. 4 LP box set. Deutsche Grammophon 1974 reissue |
@sbank
Nice selections Spencer. My TT will be cranked up soon, but first, streaming the Berlin Philharmonic live via the Digital Concert Hall…..live New Years Eve concert. Outstanding. Then, onto some vinyl, a ‘new’ one should be arriving any minute now.

Albinoni - Concerti a Cinque, Opus 9. Conecrti Nos. 1,4,7,&10, for solo violin. Vittorio Negri Bryks conducting the Italian Baroque Ensemble with Cesare Ferraressi, violin. Dover 1964 in near mint condition. A bit of a ‘thin’ recording but performed well, and nice for a Sunday morning.
It’s interesting, have not played this in a while. Graded it in Discogs with the ‘old’ Pro-Ject rig. Listening to it this morning with the new SOTA rig, and bumped it’s rating up a notch in Discogs. I’ve found this to be the case with some other albums as well. |
Schubert Quintet Op 163 & D 956. Yo-Yo Ma with the Cleveland Quartet. Columbia Masterworks 1984 |
@slaw
Brian, I found a pp of Comes a Time years ago for $4. It is a superb/sounding record!
Yes it is Steve. I bought mine when it came out, but for whatever reason, preferred his older albums and it never got much TT time. As we get older, at times, things that didn’t interest us then, do now. Such is the case for Comes A Time for me. It really sounded incredible last night. Kinda like having a new album.
Hope you are doing well.

Just arrived in the mail. My Cleveland/Szell LP collection is almost complete with this, may have a couple others yet.
Szell conducts Two Musical Fables. Kodály - Háry János Suite & Prokofiev - Lieutenant Kijé Suite. The Cleveland Orchestra. Columbia Masterworks, date unknown, but believe very early 70’s.

|
George Szell conducts Beethoven - The Four Leonores. The Cleveland Orchestra. Columbia Masterworks 1967. |
@slaw
Thanks Brian. I guess I didn't make it clear that I'm with my mother full time for several weeks while my sister recovers from shoulder surgery. No time for music, ☹️.
Yep, kinda figured. Just did the same not too long ago, so understand. Hope all, including you, are doing well, and you will be back to your rig soon.

Staying with Szell and the Clevelanders….
Szell conducts ’Two Favorite Suites’. Bizet - L'Arlesienne Suite, No. 1 & Grieg - Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46. The Cleveland Orchestra. Columbia Masterworks 1966.

I think ’Fear of Music’ is my favorite. Just sounds more ’matured’ vs the others.
That said, ’77’ and 'Buildings and Food’ were real revelations when they came out. |
@sbank
@bkeske Szell might have been the first to prove that Cleveland Rocks!
Interesting that Szell and Alan Freed were making Cleveland known on the map at roughly the same time 😉
|
Mozart - The Four Horn Concertos w/Alan Civil & Serenade No 12 in C minor. Otto Klemperer conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra. Angel/EMI 1985 remaster from 1961. |
@spiritofradio Brian, This is far better than the other one. I know there is an expensive version of this in print too but this one is spectacular. I’ll check it out. Thanks. Heck, I can afford both of them 😁 |
Szell conducts Wagner - Prelude And Love-Death From "Tristan Und Isolde” / Die Meistersinger Von Nurnberg: Prelude / Tannhäuser: Overture. The Cleveland Orchestra. Epic 1962
|
@spiritofradio
Was just looking at that album a couple days ago. Can still snag it.
|
@spiritofradio Well, the recording with Berenboin Conducting is very sweet and rather subdued. It was made live with an audience that all seemed to have coughs and colds... The EMI is something to write home about though. Incredible dynamics and tone in a great performance. One of the things I like about collecting a variety of the same performances by different conductors/symphonies, and yes, even record labels; The variety. I found the EMI UK version on Discogs for about $20-25; The original pressing. There is one by The Electric Recording Co. selling for almost $1,200. Rated about the same as the Barenboim by owners of it. That said, I do like much of what I have which Barbirolli conducted. |
Nikolaus Harnoncourt Conducts Bach - Konzert Für Zwei Violinen D-moll, BWV 1043, Violinkonzert E-dur, BWV 1042, & Violinkonzert A-moll, BWV 1041. Concentus Musicus Wien. Telefunken, unknown release date, probably the 70’s. German pressing.

As far as Deutsche Grammophon.
Of the major classical labels, I find them the most inconsistent. Some, even the newer, are wonderful, and some....just aren’t. I’ve found you really cannot go wrong with Decca/London, or usually Columbia Masterworks. Philips actually is pretty consistently good, as is RCA Red Seal.
Of course then you have BIS, Seraphim (Capitol), VOX is surprisingly good, as is Angel (EMI), but they can also be inconsistent. The older Everest pressings/recordings can be very good. Those are the ‘majors’, but there are many ‘boutique’ labels which are very good. I’d probably put BIS into that category.
This is mainly for older pressings/companies. There are some very good newer ‘boutique’ companies today. I just haven’t delved into them....yet. CD’s yes, vinyl no. |
Szell conducts Beethoven - Leonore Overture No. 1 / Leonore Overture No. 2 / Leonore Overture No. 3 / Overture To "Fidelio". The Cleveland Orchestra. Columbia Masterworks 1967.
|
Neville Marriner conducts Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. Compilation album of works by Wagner, Faure, Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Dvorak, and Boccherini. Angel 1980.
Very nice indeed. Not a fan of compilation albums, but this is a nice exception. |
Seiji Ozawa conducts Schoenberg’s Gurre-Lieder. Boston Symphony Orchestra and Tanglewood Festival Chorus. Philips 2LP Set, Netherlands pressing 1979 |
@tomic601
