Mono / Nowhere now here

I have this album and really like it.   A LOT of sound.  It’s interesting to me to compare this record listening on my open speakers to listening to the file on headphones.   The record has more and depth and presence but on the stream it is a little easier to hear what’s going on with all the harmonics.   Glad I have the record, it’s in a very cool package.

Her violin sounds real. Real wood.  The recording is so good you can hear the nuanced tonal changes in her movements.   It’s not bright (tilted down?) but very transparent.   One of my best records.   Forgot to mention : vinyl package is especially lovely - don’t get that on the stream.

@bkeske

it’s an exceptionally good recording. And I’m no judge of course but the harpist sounds quite enchanting. Nice warm tone. Harp can sometimes be tacky but not on this.

@bkeske

Brian, do you know this recording of the Saint-Saëns Op. 154?  Check it out.

@bkeske Nice Box. Got mine for $7 on your recommendation and you’re right about the great Sonics. I feel like I can hear the seams and varnish in the wood floors of the hall.

Chicago – Chicago Transit Authority (Rhino 2010 reissue)

It just keeps getting better doesn’t it?   Say, do you have the Steven Wilson remix of Chicago II?   Or, have I already asked you that?   I’ve been enjoying it mucho lately.   It is possible to buy just the black records and not the deluxe digital included version.  I got my copy sealed at the record store by Jim’s California place in Carlsbad.

@bkeske

Was just looking at that album a couple days ago. Can still snag it.

it’s a bargain. I was lucky and found a sealed copy for $8.

FYI, This is a six-song release featuring material that Sam Beam worked on while writing the 2017 record Beast Epic.  If you don’t know Beast Epic I’d highly encourage you to check it out.  Beautiful songs with simple, just enough instrumentation.   WG also includes the song “Waves of Galveston” a track that Sam has performed live but never officially released.

@slaw Steve, hang in there Brother.  Hopefully you will have time to enjoy favorites and to explore music on your earphones during this time.

So tasty.

The new fleet foxes “shore” has art on the 4th side.  It’s kinda nice.

I've 70s almost flexi-thin vinyl that sound incredible and 180 gram LPs that are noisy and dull.

my experience as well.

Tom, For example on Pat Metheny - Side Eye, 62 minutes of music on 4 sides.  Great sounding record although not on a fancy label.

Tom,

Sort of like the short sides on a 12” 45? Those are a different thing I know but every one I have (about 8) is worth the bother.

I have very few replacement records at all and none with an expanded number of discs. I do however have several newer issue, 33 rpm sets with 3 or 4 relatively short sides and they all sound great. I believe it helps. Most times I don’t mind the extra trouble (except for maybe on Neil Young’s recent Colorado - which is new but as you describe and is annoying - exception that proves the rule …)

opposite is too much ( > 25 minutes ) crammed on a side often doesn’t sound good on my rig. Case in point: in a box of piano sonatas nos. 1-4: < 20 min per side sound good. 5th: +30 min crammed on one side sounds flat, thin, crummy. Good test because every other aspect is apparently the same. But I suspect this is a well known thing to you and the cognoscenti here.

@big_greg +1 on Deep Purple morning moods.

Do you have Come Taste The Band?  Heavily Tommy Bolin influenced.

Wow! What a great Christmas gift!

To be sure!  Sam Records.  Nice.  How did they know…?

Merry Christmas Greg!  And to all.  I hope everyone here has a happy holiday with loved ones near.  We’re in a pretty good snowstorm in Bend.  Christmas music provided courtesy of Sonos…

@bkeske I love my iMac. Perfectly functional but I’ve been left way behind on updates and some new stuff I might want is non starter. In fact, it is old enough that I have been quite literally laughed at by the millennial elves on the support line. Photo display sure looks good to me. Good luck with the transition. I dread it but I know the time for it is coming for me too.
