What's in your CDP tonight? the minority report

I enjoy vinyl and digital (lately, with recent changes, vinyl actually sounds better than digital to me), BUT given what seems an overall preference for analog/vinyl on A'gon, I'm curious what the non-vinyl "1/2" is listening to. I tried to see if this was a previously posted question. Did not seem so.

This evening for me, it's Genesis (definitive edition remaster) "A Trick of the Tail".

Just now my newly acquired 1995 CD used $5 Canadian version of Golden Earing Moontan, and from the first note blows away my 2001 I always listened to, and was sort of happy with till now.
Anyone want a free 2001 version, you pay for post!

"Radar Love" - timeless!
Radar Love is my second, to me, the nine and a half minute "Vanilla Queen" is number one on the 1995 version, kills the 2005 version for jump factor.

Best sounding one on youtube still sounds crap compared to the 1995 CD

Last night was a memory lane night
America (America) untouched "original masters version".
Wow!!! still holds up well today, very good dynamic swing, plenty of depth and sound stage, and on some tracks very wide soundstage to outside the speakers!!

Then after that, the better tracks off Carly King "Tapestry" CD

Then the stunning original recording Cat Stevens "Tea for the Tillerman" 1989 CD4280 made by Denon Japan for A&M. After those CD's an a couple of Gin and Tonics under my belt I was out there and back in the 70’s +

Then sat down which I watched Alien Covenant which I’ve never seen, and with Covid19 now mutating, this movie kinda spun me out.

Cheers George

Last night Tracy Chapman "Tracy Chapman" 1st and only 1988 release brilliant stunning recording.
http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list?artist=Tracy+Chapman&album=Tracy+Chapman

Then Angus & Julia Stone "Down the Way" a little compressed, but simple (voice guitar) so it’s not too confused.

5.30pm relaxing with a Gin and tonic listening to 1984 Nancy Wilson Godsend, Denon 38C38-7188 CD I believe it’s Pre-emphasized, and I think my dac has de-emphasis, because it’s not bright, otherwise it would be, just sublime to listen to, a stunning recording.

Cheers George

Last night Joan Armatrading "Joan Armatrading" 1990 issue A&M 393 228-2
Stunning album, sounding also like it was done yesterday, nothing does old RedBook like good discrete R2R dac.
.
Then after that Propaganda "A Secrete Wish" 1985 ZIT 90288-2 another stunner!!! Can’t believe how good RedBook can sound these days, we suffered with it way back.
I now believe Philips "perfect sound forever" saying, just took time for it to get played/converted correctly.

Cheers George

Linda Ronstadt "Simple dreams" stunning sound on todays R2R dacs, the 1987 uncompressed PCM Elecktra CD release.

Last night, Roger Waters "Amused to Death"
When you want to be blown away, even without any aids.

This is the "Gone with the Wind" of music CD’s

The 1994 Sony Gold Master Sound "Super Bit Mapping" version, even better than the others, which are still very very good.

Goes to show, the saying "perfect sound forever" for CD 20 years ago, was a true statement, just back then no replay equipment could get that perfection out of them, till just in the last few years.

Tonight was Etta James "At Last" she made me cry on many of the the tracks.
Best dynamic range version 2010
http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/103607

And the rest, worst as usual was 2016 streaming compressed to the max.

Last night, listened to Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances (Eiji Oue Minnesota Orchestra) Mind blowingly good, I was mesmerized for the whole 67mins

Just finished tonight, Tears for Fears "Seeds of Love" 1989 original release, excellence personified, this album every track!!! is stunning, it reminds me of The Beatles in a way, but with a modern twist.

This 1989 one is the best, just look at the dynamic range
http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/181056

And compare it to the 2015 much more compressed, re-release.
http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/100465

And then the even worse 2020 compressed streamed/download one with bonus tracks.
http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/179948

Tonight "The The"  "Infected"
Crazy good album from 3rd track on, super wide sound stage, insane dynamics and very good original sound, from a band that didn't really get big time.

Best one again the early uncompressed, one I have .
http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/21800
Blows the later compressed remastered one away.

Tonight.
Dire Straits "Love Over Gold" I was transported listening to this, what a guitarist Mark Knopfler is, I'm only really now appreciating it fully with todays discrete R2R dac.
My very first cd purchase, bought in 1883, 38 years ago!!!! sounds as good today as the very best recordings I have, great DR (dynamic range).

Brian Bromberg "Wood" insane jazz album, extremely well produced and recorded super dynamics. Use this as as demo to highlight your system, or to sell pieces with.
Hard to get 2002 Music Group version by A440 cat no. 4001

There is this 2006 highly compressed issue,

Tonight "The Notting Hillbillies" "Missing... Presumed Having A Good Time"
Great bunch of artists got together to do this, led by Mark Knofler
Only one issue not compressed http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/3429
My fav tracks 1 2 3 and 11

Last night, "nostalgia night" from little school days, but with a couple of Scotch and sodas in me this time round, dreaming of my first crush, my music teacher, a 6ft tall blonde Russian in a mini skirt with white vinyl knee high boots, she had legs that went to heaven!!! who played this for us in school on her portable T/T!

"The Young Rascals" "Grooving" https://youtu.be/4JIq8Zn0AJE typical 60’s recording, but so much better sounding on todays R2R dacs.
Have both these and the 1988 is so much more relaxed sounding than the on edge 2010 because of the compression difference.

Last night another nostalgia evening, with George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty.
Traveling Wilburys Vol 1 cat no.925-796-2 (I thought in 1988 was a good/average recording) but no!! it’s another mind blowing recording bought to life at last with todays R2R dacs.
As usual only get the 1988 non compressed version, look how they butchered the later re-releases and download/streamed ones with compression.

Another wow!! night this time with (ELO) Electric Light Orchestra "Eldorado" 1987 cd version "non compressed" Epic ZK 35526 , this is what Redbook was always meant to sound like through a good discrete R2R dac.

My favorite "Parisian Walkways 93" (Virgin France PM 515 limited edition) http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/66275

Still a little on the "bright" side
The SHM ones are a bit compressed to the originals, any compression make things sound bright/loud and uneasy to me.

Yeah Angus!!! Sat next to him in 1st and 2nd year music class very Monday morning up the back of the class room at Ashfield Boys High, one real strange dude.

The music teacher, gorgeous 6ft blonde Russian little tiny skimpy white mini skirt, with plastic gogo boots to the knee.

When she wrote on the blackboard, Angus would yell out (in his cockney accent) "higher Miss can’t see up the back", naturally the mini skirt would rise way up, many sighs, no need to say any more. (I’m sure she knew what was going on)

Oh and the "A" on the cap and blazer pocket was for Ashfield not Angus as everyone thinks.

This evening just finished Stevie Nicks "Bella Donna" 1984 West German pressing
Cat No-299-69 stunning sound, just love everything about this woman.

Check out the dynamic range variations in this album, from the great early to the later very compressed obviously re-mastered/re-issued download/streamed versions.

Heart (Dreamboat Annie) talk about no chick flick.
The opening track "Magic Man" rocks it’s head off, and the low bass at the end will really test your system lf ability.

Last night with a couple of GT’s under the belt, a great Jazz evening

James Morrison 1991 "Manner Dangerous" Insanely good dynamics will give you concussion on the louder notes and you’ll love it. Done before they started to compress his later albums more and more, and make them unlistenable on big dynamic systems.

Manner Dangerous
  • Released: December 1991
  • Label: EastWest (903176023.2/903176023.4)
  • Formats: CD

Elton John "Madman Across the Water" not a big fan, but this is something else, brilliant, stunning there are no adjectives that can describe just how good this album was.

Naturally the best release, was the most uncompressed one, that was the first 1985 as usual.

Look at the compression difference with your fav "All The Nasties"
track8 2004 SACD version
https://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/52257
Or 1996 track8 again downloaded
https://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/110436

Then the track8 1985 nearly 20 years earlier uncompressed version
https://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/186376

Cheers George

"All The Nasties" with that crescendo-ing outro has some real magic.
"All The Nasties" brilliant!!!!!!!

Called being uncompressed back then, when there were no iphones/tablets/earbuds/walkmans etc etc to blow up and the earphones when the big crescendos/transients came along. Now they have to compress otherwise they would blow those teeny speakers/earbuds, if turned up during the quiter intros/passages.

So they have to compress it these days, to stop all that destruction, and as a bonus for them less space is used when they stream, so less space less streaming costs to them
Like this unfortunate compressed junk. Good also in cars in heavy city traffic, jackhammers etc.
https://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/103194
https://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/182565

Here’s something good to look at EJ early uncompressed
https://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list/year/1?artist=elton+john
Compared it to most of the later stuff
https://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list/year/3?artist=elton+john (something happened though between 2017 to 2019) they went back to uncompressed????? Which is weird, someone said something to someone??

Very good tweak, original first issue, uncompressed re-issues, untouched with no (streaming/downloading) compression.
Gunna get me a set of these. (Seems to be 5 discs though)

Just got a used Rickie Lee Jones Pop Pop cd for $5, amazing, extremely dynamic album, shame about the album cover though.
Looks like she doesn’t allow compression of any sort even with her re-issues, then it was late 90’s and later it started to happen.
