What is the best tube for a Conrad Johnson

Hello

I have an older Conrad johnson permier 4 power amp in exellent condition running the top end of a set of infility RS-1b's. They have 7 emims and 4 emits per side. They are ribbon drivers. I want to retube it and would like an idea what EL34 power tube would sound nicer on my speakers. One other question is how do ruby tubes sound.

Thanks

I have a pair of NOS EL34 teles. the rare(r) type with the small wings on each plate. Feel free to email if interested. $100/ea is a steal for real NOS West german teles. (not RFT, etc.), and these will be more than that. Factory matched pair w/orig boxes btw.

Try to find the NOS EL34 Telefunkens (very rare and expensive- $100.00 per tube). Test of they are the best of the best. Good luck.
Ask CJ before you bother. They are quite particular. I don't think it will be worth the money.
Hello

I replaced all my tubes with 8 Svetlanas(EL-34's)and new 5751/6Cg7 tubes. The amp deffinetly sounds much better.

I have one more question, I see in adds that poeple say that you con switch from EL-34's to 6550's or KT-88's on this amp. This amp has a bias conlrole for every output tube. So is it as simple as changing the tubes and resetting the bias. If it is, what is the benifet. (more power or better sound??????)

Thanks

Your best bet is update the 5751 and 6Cg7 tubes first - those will have more effect than EL34s. I had a pair of CJ Pr. 5s for a while, and found the (old) Svetlana EL34 to be the best that was reasonably affordable. I still have some nice 5751s and 6CG7s to part with that are left over from those days if anyone is in the market...

Darin,

There are plenty of good new production EL-34 tubes out there. The Svetlanas, Sovtek, Valve Art are all good tubes. The Svetlana is considered by many to be the most balanced of the bunch.
