what is jitter supposed to sound like?

I understand what jitter is from reading books and stuff. however, what kind of sound does it produce? I assume it is different from regular hiss....but I am not sure either.

If you could hear it, it would sound like a low level hiss. More important, how would the recording sound without dither? How can one know, since dither is always used as standard. Bob P.
