I AM PHILIPPE IN FRANCE AND I WOULD LIKE TO PUT A SUBWOOFER WITH MY MG3.6R. IS IT A GOOD THING ? THE FILTER BETWEEN BASS AND MEDIUM IS AT 200/250HZ, IS IT GOOD TO PUT THE SUB TO 200/250HZ ? SO WE DON'T NEED A BIG AMP FOR ONLY DRIVE MEDIUM AND HIGHS ? WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THAT AND WHAT CAN I DO FOR BETTER ? SORRY FOR BAD ENGLISH ! CORDIALLY REGARDS
Hello Philippe, The REL subs are the best I have heard so far with the MG3.6R in my listening room. Mine integrates very well with the main speakers set at 34hz. The frequency range of the Stadium III is 18hz-100hz. The MG3.6R is rated 34hz-40khz.
The sub is to fill in the bass below what the panel bass drivers deliver, not replace them. The powered sub will not change the amp requirements of the main speakers. A big SS amp is my choice.
I have a pair of Vandersteen 2wq's with my 3.6's and they work extremely well. Very seamless. REL is also highly regarded and reported to work very well with Magnepans. You can't go wrong with either of these two. There are undoubtably a number of others that will work well also given time and care in set-up. I think the ear is a bit less sensitive to anomolies in the real low frequency range therefore has more tolerance for slight phase and tonal imperfections, as long as these imperfections do not manifest themselves as boomy and/or loose (in other words, home theater bass).
Although much of their line is not on a par with REL, the top of the line Velodyne Digital Drive Series subs are quite impressive. In addition to top notch performance, they offer a tremendous level of control over the integration and equalization of the sub with the speakers. I have a DD-12 paired with my Thiel CS3.6's, and it works very well with them.
The Alon Thunderbolt is very fast and tonally accurate - a real music lover's sub - plus it's relatively inexpensive too ($1600 list.) It integrates very welll with planars as well as Alon's own speakers. Give 'em a try. You might even consider a pair.
I like them slightly better than the RELs, which were by far the best I'd heard with Maggies prior to the Thunderbolts. (I now have all Alon system including the T-bolts.)
