Watkins WS-1A

Looking to sell Watkins WS-1A. I've search the web for any kind of value of these speakers. I currently live in Kingsport T.N. and have contacted Watkins Stereo about the possible refurbishing of the pair. They haven't been played in at least 15years, stored in a non working freezer. I hooked the set up and they sound great but one mid. Can anyone give me a value and should I have them refurbished or let buyer.

Hi nasty1,

Those are some great vintage speakers and very rare, populated with the first gen of the famous Infinity Watkins Dual Drive woofer as you likely already know. One of my speakers of choice (the other Pioneer HPM-100) in my vintage mid-fi rig.

I looked for a pair of these for over one year, even posted a wanted ad in Kingsport Craigslist. No responses, nada. Fear that many have simply set them at the curb after years of storage when the significant other put her foot down or other misfortunes.

A good friend that still lives in Kingsport found a mint pair and acquired them through trade. He also found me a good condition pair (cabinets not mint) for $400 locally with recent Watkins-refurbed woofers and mids and complete testing by Bill Jr. At least one datapoint for price...

Selling equipment with known problems is rarely a good idea to bring best price and especially when the fix is so inexpensive and so convenient. Call Bill Jr.

BTW - you are very fortunate to still live in such a beautiful place surrounded by good people.

Dave

Hi nasty1,

No prob. I guess most prefer the town of their youth so I like Kingsport as you do g-ville (also a very nice place). I remember visiting Watkins Stereo as a kid and being awestruck at the wonderland of cool equipment they once sold. Bought my first two systems there.

Good to read everything is good with your WS-1As. If the cabinets and grills are good I would think $400 is a good price to seek in your area.

Those speakers are worth much more IMO, but you know how people are.
