What is the rest of your system? Regarding #2: can't help ya' with this. Sorry.
Matching a sub to the 1sc is going to be a tough project. I have owned a pair of 1sc's for several months now, and I just can't imagine a sub that could possibly keep up with them. With the home theater craze, most companies have made their subs boomier and fatter sounding than they ever used to. Personally, I think the 1sc's have plenty of bass for my tastes and room. What is your room like? Perhaps you should think about milking more bass out of the ProAcs, rather than spending money on adding an octave of sloppy sound to these wonderful speakers.

There is nothing that comes close at the size or price. I'm not sure if anything really beats it at any price. If you don't have a loca; dealer contact kcaudio@fastlane.net

You can connect it directly to your speaker outputs on the amp avoiding the external Xover syndrome.

I use B&W CDM7's for the fronts and they produce great mid-bass I just fill in the lower octaves w/ an ES10.
Only if you consider subwoofers for high-end music reproduction, I can gladly recommend REL subwoofers beginning from the Strata II. My favorite is the Stadium II. They share one thing: transparency and ability to disappear with only widening and deepening the soundstage. They match up even with electrostats in speed and definition! And they offer true linear bass extension down below 20 Hz (the Stadium II reaches 8 Hz at -3 dB in average rooms).
My recommendation is an old JBL D130F. It was originally a speaker built by James B. Lansing for Fender (hence the F) because Dick Dale wanted something that could take 100W from a tube head amp. The speaker dates back to c.1956-1958. I just aquired one from a friend and had it re-voiced and coned. It was $215 to do from JBL but worth the effort. I then proceeded to build a box, I know what you are thinking...rest assured, it is awesome! Quite possibly one the the cleanest sounding speakers, especially for a sub, I have ever heard. I am driving it with 150W currently, but looking for my own amp since the one I have isn't mine. It was broken (that is why I had the work done) while being driven with 1000W in a chain of three...it can take the punishment!!! Anyways, usually you can find one of these speakers between $100-$350 depending on its condition. If you need any other advice on this particular speaker, let me know! yosemitesamiam@yahoo.com
