Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?

I have just acquired a 32 year old JVC/Victor TT-101 DD turntable after having its lesser brother, the TT-81 for the last year.
TT-101
This is one of the great DD designs made at a time when the giant Japanese electronics companies like Technics, Denon, JVC/Victor and Pioneer could pour millions of dollars into 'flagship' models to 'enhance' their lower range models which often sold in the millions.
Because of their complexity however.......if they malfunction.....parts are 'unobtanium'....and they often cannot be repaired.

Hi everyone,  I was going to start my own thread,  but this one is as good as any,  with the resurgence of vynl,  I have decided to jump in, I've only owned 1 turntable back in 1982, so I've went and bought 3 turntables, lol!, I've also been buying and selling audio to good effect the last two months,  I bought the 3 tables to flip to be honest here,  however,  when me and the wife found out what one of the tables was worth on ebay,  we decided to keep that one,  it's the technics sl 1600 mk2, was not working,  the wife is an audiophile,  a true diy fixer to say the least, she has indeed fixed the technics sl 1600mk2,  at the moment,  that was the automatic tone arm belt, costed  $.48 cents 😊, we have more to do I'm sure,  however,  the table is fully functional at this moment,  the other two tables are technics sl 1500 mk1, and the sl d303 table  we are going to go through and fix if anything is wrong,  I  own a $65,000.00 main system now,  but the analog turntable system we are building,  we will call it,  the vintage system,  after testing many various vintage speaker monitors and book shelf speaker's and receivers of the sort,  we hand picked out the best sounding receiver I've heard in my lifetime,  any way,  in the last 5 weeks,  this is where the vintage system is , sherwood all silicon S-8800 140 watts/fet in perfect like new condition,  the legendary Advent/3 speaker's,  Nakamichi RX- 505 cassette deck,  new phono pre-amp,  the Vincent pho 700 mm/mc with outboard power supply tube/solid state hybrid ,  Audiotechnica AT-OC9/3 micro coil cartridge, flagship moving coil cart of Audiotechnica,  I  haven't gotten to cable's yet,  but I've got my picks for brands,  I  may trick out the technics sl 1600mk2 turntable?, anyway,  this is my current building system,  I enjoy learning from all, although I've been building systems for 36 year's,  I'm only 49 years old,  lol, my mother bought my first system at 13, I've never looked back since,  I do want to learn,  maybe recap the sl 1600mk2?, are there capacitors in the signal path,  this table is full of capacitors , all opinions I welcome with,  the vintage system 🖒
Hi lewm,  thankyou for your informative post,  I enjoy learning,  we did listen to a whole lot of equipment to come to our impression's,  our goal was to go back in time to hear if anything was as good as today or better,  we got frustrated with the notion that newer was better,  we'll,  the consensuous was wrong!, I suppose that getting jensen or murdof capacitors is inadequate for none signal capacitors for the technics sl 1600mk2 turntable we hand picked out, I would enjoy all the help from you and anyone else,  as far as the main system you asked about,  it is the only modified krell 700cx out there according to krell that we spent the  $11,500.00 doing so back in December 2014, then I'm useing a digital player that we got rid of an ayon cd2s player for called,  Vincent cds7 , btw, we run directly to the Krell 700cx amplifier,  then, we have taralab's zero gold XLR interconnect between them,  speaker cable's are taralab's omega gold speaker cable's,  with special order omega 10" speaker jumper's for bi-cableing the 4 speaker post on our jbl L7 vintage speaker's,  btw, just bought the mint second pair after selling the first L7 speaker's thinking we would go up to any  $25,000.00 new or used speaker's,  that expenditure was a bummer,  so we looked long and hard and found mint condition jbl l7 speaker's,  paid  $ 400.00 shipping out of new York city to Mobile, Alabama,  useing plycon furniture and automobile transportation group carrier,  I  also use a taralab's oyaida terminationed Cobalt power cord,  with furutech gtx-rhodium NCF outlet's through out the system with dedicated lines we did our self's,  so the main answer to your question about the analog turntable,  we do not use or have a active pre-amp on main system, cheers.
Seems like I'm collecting vintage turntable's,  I just obtained the pioneer pl-550 direct drive table,  I already have the technics sl-1600mk2, can anyone tell me much about the pioneer?, at the moment,  the technics seems to be in a whole league of it's own with performance compared to the pioneer.
Hi lewm,  Thankyou for your informative post,  I will seek all of them out you listed,  although, I didn't know kenwood made a good turntable,  I'm also collecting vintage reciever's,  integrated amp's,  etc...
Hi lewm and pryso,  I'm new to the vintage turntable's,  speaking of kenwood,  I don't believe I would sell them short,  I  currently have a kenwood kr 9600 reciever in mint condition that embarrasses my friend's Rega osiris integrated amplifier that retail's for  $10,000.00 in my opinion,  in every imaginable audiophile way, I'm looking for the best possible vintage table for the kr 9600, mmm, this is excellent news kenwood made some exceptional table's,  to have you gentleman laugh, I've never listened to another vintage table better than my technics sl-1600mk2.
Hi  rwwear, Thankyou for your post, I am very pleased to see all the incredible kenwood turntable's here on this thread,  thankyou to all of you gentleman,  I feel like a high school kid all over again,  this is quite exciting to learn so much here, I will definitely be pursuing some kenwood deck's over time, would all of you gentleman agree that the Lo7D is the best preference out of all the kenwood deck's  listed here on this thread?
Gentlemen,  A few question's here,  I have seen video's of this funny looking cart on the technics sl-1600mk2, it looks like a concord plane, very long and angles down on the end,  ok,  everyone laugh again,  what's this cartridge called?, can all turntable's use this cartridge?, it seems to have great treble detail to the sound on these videos, also,  what is all of your opinion's for a cartridge and needle for the 1600mk2? I have some sort of collector adc cartridge that I was considering buying the best contact Japanese needle for,  quite expensive,  however,  I was told by a online shop that by doing so,  this would make this adc the flagship,  since that's all adc ever did was improve the needle's going up the cart food chain,  adc seems to be doing another industry now,  no longer making cartridge's.
Hi shadorne, That my friend is a buetiful pioneer pl-550 on your system page,  did you refinish the deck your self?, what cartridge and type of needle is your favorite preference for this turntable?, I would love to get my pl-550  done with this finish,  how would I go about doing the refinish?
Hi lewm, I suppose I should forget the Concord deal,  I highly respect you and value your opinion,  have you ever had experience with the technics sl-1600mk2?, if so,  what was your preference for a good moving magnet cart and top needle?, I will move on to a out standing phono amp later and get a good moving coil cart,  however,  my buddy claims that moving magnet has better body to the sound, where the moving coil is resolution?
Shadorne,  please post the complete information of where I can do all this to my pl-550, with phone number to the business, and contact name,  question,  why do you have the denon dl 110 on your turntable?, what's wrong with the pioneer arm?
Chakster, thankyou for the comprehensive informative post, and little technical for me to understand,  however,  I will be sure to figure your post out.
