VCR playback glitch

Now that I recall the LP record mode, which I haven’t thought about in decades, it’s true that when you play a tape, the VCR would always go to SP before finding the correct playback speed. I remember trying EP and not liking it. LP was fine, but in retrospect I just wish the only speed they had was SP. 

Anyway, did this glitch continue with newer VCRs? Because I never tried EP or SLP (whatever you call it) after getting a stereo VCR.
