You are missing the point completely - the crossovers are a very ELEGANT solution to perfectly blending the subwoofer to the main speaker - NO ONE does this better than Vandersteen.
When properly setup (not hard to do) you cannot tell there is a powered subwoofer - it blends seamlessly with the speaker - becomes one with the speaker. All because of that little, unobtrusive crossover that you place behind your amps.
As for the electrical requirements, that subwoofer amplifier. in combination with that ingenious crossover, unloads your main amplifier so that it can make the midrange and treble magic.
