IMO, the best pre ever assembled to deal particularly with its accuracy in the timbers was the lumberjack. monty python, of course, did the famous commercial for it. here's the original script:

I think Cornfedboy may be operating a couple watts shy of rated power tonight.

Perhaps if you had titled it "The Timbre Jack," a larger base of audiophiles would have accepted it.

Taking a break from my skipping and jumping, I see that two of the lines I carry, Thor and Atma-Sphere, have already been recommended. I love it when people agree with me.

I might add that Atma-Sphere pre-amps and Atma-Sphere amps together have a most musical synergy. If you're using a single-ended amplifier, then the Thor is what you're looking for. I use these pre-amps to demo big full range Sound Lab electrostats, which are perhaps the most timbrally rich and revealing speakers out there.
