Thoughts on Iconoclast interconnects?

Hi all. I have Iconoclast Gen 2 UPOCC RCA cables connecting my LTA preamp to my Audionet amp. They sound very transparent and neutral to me; however, in the past, I have always had XLR cables and therefore haven't tried any other RCA cables at this position of my system. It might be nice to have a slightly more enveloping and 3D soundstage with just a tiny bit of warmth. I have no doubt that AQ Thunderbirds, Cards Clear Beyond and Audience Frontrow would all be fantastic options to try, but the new retail price is a bit more than I care to spend. I am fine purchasing used.

For those that have used Iconoclast, what are your thoughts on these cables and what if any cables did you prefer to them? Would like to have some input before rolling the dice on some of the more costly options.

@v-fi I agree with your thoughts on Iconoclast and that an in home trial is the only way to really know what is going to be best in my system. I should look into the details of an in home trial with the brands I mentioned and possibly others. Given the high cost of some of those cables, I am not sure if it is possible to get multiple in for audition at the same time from a place like the CableCo. The other point I have been thinking about is that a free home trial also locks me into buying new at retail price. Not a deal breaker, but I like the idea of saving some money with used interconnects where returns aren't going to happen.

@kennymacc Undoubtedly, the Thunderbirds are excellent. I have used AQ Fire and Earth XLRs for some time so I feel like the Thunderbirds would be a natural progression, but it could also be fun to try something completely new. I see LTA is often paired with Cardas at shows, so that seems like another possibility. I have also previously owned speaker cables and power conditioners from Audience that were nice.

@zlone did you stick with the AZ Matrix Ref's in your Audionet setup? I believe you were thinking about replacing them in another thread, but I didn't see how that ended. I might be in a similar situation in that I can't say anything bad about my current RCAs, but just wondering if it is possible to achieve even better synergy and improve on what I already think is a pretty engaging sound.

Good to hear the AZ Matrix RCAs are working well in your setup @zlone  The Matrix or Silver interconnects are now on my list to try.

@cbrez Thank you for sharing your experience! It is even more valuable given that we have the same preamp and speakers. I was not too familiar with Zenwave, but I am tempted to try them next. I looked at the price of the D4 and it was about the same as Iconoclast, so not unreasonable. I am hoping they have a trial period as well and that would clinch it for me. Of course now I also need to decide whether I want to do the Level 3 upgrade on the LTA first. Decisions.

@zlone thanks for the information on the silver. I think I an fairly neutral now so I don’t want to tip too far into the lean and analytical direction.

Quick update. I was deciding between the Zenwave D4 and a lightly used pair of Audience Frontrow RCAs. In the end, I decided to give the Frontrows a try. I can always resell them if they don't offer a clear improvement over the Iconoclast.

The Audience FrontRow RCAs arrived and have settled in a bit now. I would say that almost everything I had read about them is what I am also hearing. The most appealing aspect of the cables is more spatial presence and a little bit wider soundtstage. They are ever so slightly softer in the highs, but this also makes them smoother and musically engaging in my system. The speakers disappear a little more with the FrontRows.

I could see how the Iconoclast cables could be preferred in a different system. They have spatially sharper and more defined edges, but the overall image is somewhat smaller and more condensed. As was said at the audiobacon website, the Iconoclast are also a little more vivid, slightly more detailed and leaner overall.

Pretty close, but in my system, I will give the nod to the Audience and keep them. I am going to get the LTA Micorzotl Level 3 preamp upgrade next. I will probably keep the Iconoclast until then and I can reevaluate if one sounds better with the upgrade. Thanks to all who commented in this thread.

I really do wonder what the Zenwaves would sound like. I have AQ Fire silver interconnects and a Mundorf silver/gold DC cable I really like, so the idea of the silver/gold wire in the D4s intrigues me. Someday, I will have to try them.
