Thiel Owners

Guys-

I just scored a sweet pair of CS 2.4SE loudspeakers. Anyone else currently or previously owned this model?
Owners of the CS 2.4 or CS 2.7 are free to chime in as well. Thiel are excellent w/ both tubed or solid-state gear!

Keep me posted & Happy Listening!

@jafant

I’m located in Europe. Exactly in Italy.

Very soon I’ll tell you about my listenings.

I can tell, that already from the first tests, the sound obtained is magnificent.

I have had a lot of problems with Jatzen inductors. @tomthiel , in one of his precious speeches, had suggested to me, that I could solve the problem by calculating a resistance for it. Unfortunately, not having the suitable tools to make measurements, I preferred to put the original inductances back.

So, the magic of Thiel sound is back but with more performance.

Thanks to your advice, the cabinets and the rest of the upgrade. 😎

Hi everyone.

I've been reading this thread for some time. I was encouraged to improve the performance of my beloved Thile C2.4.
I started working on XO and I thought about putting them externally. This is the preview of my work.

Soon, I'll be doing some listening sessions

@beetlemania  For the bypass I have used the 0,1 uF Miplex KCPU

But .... i have doubts about the inductance.

Despite the human voices are improved I think that the Jatzen inductance, situate on the output, - you can see in the picture- have changed the performance in worse

Now, I no longer listen the same depth, holography and linearity in the global sound emission. It is like listening a hump, between the medium-high and medium-low frequency cross,  while the sound is projected forward

Dear @tomthiel  what do you think about it? I am really worried

As we can see, I left the original internal wiring, but lined it with some cotton. The four binding posts are made of copper. I replaced the plastic plates with aluminum plates and fixed them with neoprene gaskets. I respected and kept the graphics

Finally I finished to upgrade the CS2.4 to SE version and stand alone xover structure.

This is my tribute to Jim Thiel.

Perhaps, he would have designed like this the crossover structure for the Xovor 😶

@beetlemania thank you very much for the tips.

I moved the low frequency inductance by turning the board. I can't do better. 😃

As for the two resistors and their cooling, maybe, your problem is caused by the contact between the resistor and the aluminum heatsink. As you can see in the picture, I used a high efficience  thermal pad, which also  damping from vibrations and isolates from direct contact with the aluminum heat sinks.I listened for several hours and didn't notice anything.  Anyway, I'll do, more critical listening.

The binding posts are the genuine Thiel, recovered from the plastic plate. I'd like to replace them with your Cardas rhodium over silver, but I have to wait. I spent too much money with this upgrade. 😆

Thanks @tomthiel . I really appreciated your considerations. I am truly honored.

I love Thiel products. Especially CS 2.4 but especially the CS 2.7

My upgrade wants to be a tribute to the great JimThiel. 🙂

@jafant

you wrote

"Thank You for the follow up. What other electronics/gear is in your system?"

This is My sistem:

Source - Computer Transport, feed by linear power supplies on separate chassis; DAC Merging Hapi; Master Clock OCX HD Antelope; Software Player HQPlayer; Preamp Audio Research SP16 with output film condenser improved; Two amp W3 Moon (bridge mode)

This is an old photo. Taken before the outboard crossover cabinet was built

@tomthiel

Thank you for your appreciation. My interest in high-end professional digital sources began twenty years ago. In my opinion, Merging is a point of no return. I can wright a lot about it, but I don’t want to go off topic.

Back to my updated CS2.4, I would like to spent some word about its. Saturday, for a few hours I listened they and I can say that I was very impressed.
- Resolution
- Holography,
- Sound more clear and cleaning,
- Naturalness,
- Linearity,
- Pleasure of listening
,  leaved me speechless.

Every parameter of my beloved loudspeakers, that I know as the lining of my pockets, it was improved.

Really!
I didn’t think I would get such a result.
All this improvement I checked it out with only 15 hours of work.

What will happen in 100 hours of sound?

It was a hard work, but it was worth it.
My system has taken impoprtant jump forward in quality .
With these results, I bless every penny spent.

My upgrade consist in:

Outboard Crossover.

In the picture the cabinets inspired on the CS 2.4 design

All caps replacement.

For the coax I mixed Clarity Caps CSA 250V with Jantzen Alumen Z-Cap and Miflex KPCU 03 250V 0.1uF. While for the woofer, Clarity Caps + Miflex KPCU 03 250V 0.33uF

All resistor replacement with Mills MRA12. I paid particular attention to 16 and 30 Ohm resistors by inventing two passive coolers for them. As you can see, I inserted a thermal pad between the aluminum and the resistor in order to dampen the vibrations and isolate the contact with the aluminum.

I kept all the genuine coils.

I tried replacing them with Jantzen wax coils and the Cross Coil, but I got a bad result. The sound had worsened, distorting the CS2.4 sound characteristics.

As regards the components running-in and the relative improve sound, I will update you. 🙂
