Thiel Owners

Guys-

I just scored a sweet pair of CS 2.4SE loudspeakers. Anyone else currently or previously owned this model?
Owners of the CS 2.4 or CS 2.7 are free to chime in as well. Thiel are excellent w/ both tubed or solid-state gear!

Keep me posted & Happy Listening!

Jayfant;

when are are you going to post your system pictures with the 2.4se
they are beautiful speakers!

What are you running them with

Jeff

Jfant;

I went to Chicago to listen to Pass Labs, a while ago,and also listened to a PrimaLuna Integrated with SonusFaber Olympics

The PrimaLuna was very, very smooth and velvety with nasty rock albums that I brought along as reference.

If integrated is an option, I would highly recommend a look at PL.

i listened with ARC stuff, too
PL was much better to me, CJ like

JFant;

send pics or post  of your system
i would love to see how you are evolving?

i just loaded in a Meridian Explorer2 dac
and played MQA
sound quality is very nice

thiels are getting really " sweet sounding"

jeff

RonKent;

wow, 2.7's
and a BHK amp!

how do they match together ?
what preamp and dac are you running?
i love a picture to see how it all looks
im a visual guy

sweet treble?

between you and jfant
you guys have a Thiel Heaven

jeff

Gents;

I saw notes on amps & preamps that are a good efficacy with Thiel
( at the start I could not say that!!!)

After a good 3-4 months ; I can say that Conrad Johnson ET3 and Pass Labs XA30.5's make a superb combo. ( Kimber Hero IC)

I tube rolled from EH6922 ( standard) which is very detailed an a bit , edgy, forward ( aggressive tone) to a Amprex & finally a National/Mitsubishi 6922 cyro job,
very good bass, smooth & detailed highs and lots of space.

Anyway, The combo is rich tone, extremely spatial & smooth delicate highs

I always wondered if I should have gone with a older CJ 16 or 17? From the comments of others ( never listened to)
But, Not now, the newer version ET3 is the best of both worlds( I think), details overflow And wonderful tone, especially compared to the Audio Research preamps ( slightly bleached tone to me) that I am able to hear in a lot of places

Highly recommended & food for thought

I am now dumbfounded at hearing differences in recording qualities of albums; some thin, some fat, some all highs , some all bass, some spectacular since preamp.
and...............shitty 80's albums are almost enjoyable and not burning my eardrums out

one of these days,   I'll hear a GAT

jeff

Gents:

I guess I am the bad boy describing the ARC preamp

" slightly bleached tone"

I think Prof & I hear the same way from his description's trying to clarify

the ARC has oodles of detail & soundstage, but TONE is gray or bleached to me ,as Prof said, too

The ET3 has a rounder, more fullly colored tone than ARC......

I have a sub connected, too & the adjustment in the 100-300 hz range really makes tones go thick, thin, boom, blurry, etc.       You have to adjust with precision of surgeon....

When you get it right, as local audio guys have taught me, tone is very good & preamp shines thru

I suspect the tube is what makes the difference ( 6h30?) for etched/bleach/grayness

Prof,  No pictures of your system?

what " stuff" do you have for components

jeff

Prof;

Nice "stuff"
I saw one of the big tube amps you have......Lots of big tubes!

Mbl has a nice rep, but to hard to find space to listen to  at shows

" tone"  over details is where I seem to be morphing, too, also
But love great soundstage & details, too

I've got a hearing loss issue that accents screeching treble, harshness, more than most & has had me searching to make 80's compressed music listenable, for me
The CJ pre and a Tube change has really finished to search
A EH tube to a NOS has REALLY helped satisfy my ears

I've listened to Thiel 1.7,2.7 & 3.7
THE 2.7 was best for me due to playing with an Ayre amp
The others with a Parasound, & no break-in
Ayre has a sweet high end with a tad softening

All,had the Thiel sound, just varying bass levels that effected the tonality.
A sub fixes that!! And has adjustment

What a hobby!
Note: a friend has a Volti speaker and it is a tone monster, to me
If you get a chance listen to one...

Jeff

Prof;

Well said:. It's like talking about your kids,.    "..........make them puke"
lol

Coherence is definitely Thiels thing

I'm afraid I'm leaving you guys.....
just got a Revel Ultima Studio2

I'm going thru death throws finding a baseline , again
what a pain....just shoot me

pass amps work with everything!!!

jeff

JF

yep, toob rolling
The OEM tubes are bright and forward.
I almost returned ET3

I tried Amprex.    Smooth & big bass
I tied Gold Lion.     So,so
Then, Mitsubishi with cyro.     Ooh,baby.   Detailed,bass & smooth
  Telefukun like, I'm told

The CJ with Tube is English gentleman of Pre's-pure & grainfree

jeff
Gents;

I originally wanted CS2.7’s and had heard them, but that was in 2012 or so

i could not take the scs4t’s unless the sub was running.  To thin on bottom
I knew that going in, when I bought them

I , had also, tried the F208’s at home( see pic) and highs were “ouch” with peachtee stuff. 200 watt ice class d & pre & bass so-so

I went to a bunch of AXPONA shows and thought the Revel Ultima line was ok but, not much of low end...
mac amps, ml, Bryston, amps etc
Bryston was nice bottom end, but high end was “ ouch”

In Florida I heard them with Pass Stuff
holy crap
what a difference amps have with speakers

Anyway , Up and running with sub
and I gotta say:  the be tweeter is very resolving and smooth
with the CJ ET3 and NOS tubes
( Thiel was pretty hashy, till I did the CJ, too)

 I’m pretty happy so far, Full, accurate and resolving....

I know this is “ blasphemy “, but the sweet spot is bigger than the Thiel and bigger soundstage

so, Far the full range Studio2 is pretty nice, way better than the F208’s
Treble is really, really, good

Time will tell
what a hobby! !!

Jeff
Benedict Arnold here;

Gents, many of you appear to have spectacular systems.
Many with integrated subs!!

BUT; many have not posted a System picture & item description!!!!

please do!

Prof; I would love to see the CJ stack along with your room

jeff
Gents;

As Thiels are "somewhat" resolving
lol
What DAC's do you guys run to get the most out of the system?

are there some that accentuate brightness or edge.

Jeff

Ron;

One of your posts mentioned your hearing issues
If played to loud "my ears buzz like a tweeter"

We hear the same way & especially with compressed 80's rock albums.
My hearing starts howling...lol

I feel your pain....... Have you had a hearing test, lately?
I have my hearing accentuate at the crossover frequency

Does the loudness/Tweeter happen on well recorded stuff, too?

Do any of the filter setting on the PS Dac , help attenuate it?

Jeff

Ps: I hear the crossovers in the 3.7 were by Jim
       The 2.7 was done by Phil Bamburg of the speaker builder in Indiana
        Any correlation ?

Tom T;
Many apologies for the “ fake news”

i always thoijght if it was posted on the internet; It ws a fact!!!!

lol

i guess the point was:
2 different people or consultants designed the crossover
Could that ( different designers) be a variable

keep up the good work

jeff
Gents:

This is a great forum:. "Thiel Owners"
The best and most honest/fact based of this Audiogon site, in my opinion

Not a lot of BS, and if miss-stated, there is always a nice respectful return

keep up good work

Jeff
