Thiel Owners

Guys-

I just scored a sweet pair of CS 2.4SE loudspeakers. Anyone else currently or previously owned this model?
Owners of the CS 2.4 or CS 2.7 are free to chime in as well. Thiel are excellent w/ both tubed or solid-state gear!

Keep me posted & Happy Listening!

beatlemania,Thanks :)

I realize that the investment I made (> € 750) is not really realistic with a new loudspeaker of €5000 (bought them for €1600), but it is amazing how eagerly the CS2.4 appreciates the parts!!
I have had many (Magnapan, Kharma, Audiostatic, Kef, Oragle-Helicon, Red Rose Music, Aurum Cantus, Scansonic, etc etc) loudspeakers and I usually improve the crossovers because there is usually a lot to be gained but there is no one that comes even close to this Thiel loudspeaker :)

Wish Jim Thiel was still alive so I could shake his hands with respect!!
tomthiel,

Thank you also for your contribution over here, much appreciated!!

Sorry no readable serials on my loudspeakers.

Finished the second loudspeaker and there seems nothing wrong, except my jaw is laying on the floor, what a great great great sound!!!

This still without the Jantzen wax coils.
Tomthiel,

A transcription about the Jantzen wax coil’s from a Dutch guy I really trust, Tony Gee

To get straight to the door: I absolutely love it! 8) With the 1.5mH Wax Coil I did a 1 to 1 comparison with a normal air coil with 2mm wire (Rdc = 0.22ohm) and a CFC-12 copper foil coil (Rdc = 0.21ohm), both from Mundorf. Furthermore, I have used both the 1.5mH Wax Coil and the 0.47mH Wax Coil in a number of different filter configurations.

What is immediately noticeable compared to an ordinary air coil is the large increase in spatiality and placement of the individual instruments in an orchestra. This phenomenon is something that ordinary copper foil coils also have, so not surprising that the Wax Coils in that respect are better than standard air coils. But what they offer even more than a normal copper-foil coil (and I’ve fallen for that), is the whole natural and expressive harmonic structure. Strings sound delicious to wood, intestine, horsehair and resin. Sopranos have a natural heat in their voice, etc.

These positive qualities are best reflected in classical music, singing and acoustic instruments, with "produced" popular music in particular the extra spatiality.
what strikes me is that if you press the passive woofer the active woofer (of course) comes out but then almost immediately it will slowly return to its neutral position, so there is some air leakage, is that intentionally also the intention or do I have to look for the leak?
beetlemania,

There are still questions about the Wax coils values, my LCR meter indicates that they are too high in value, they are sent to Jantzen and according to them they are within the specs, next week I get them back and can tell more.

For the time being they have not been in the woofer crossovers yet.

Regarding the Jantzen foil coils on the coax board (which were part of the last total upgrade), I can not say anything specifically about what only the foil coils do in the whole picture, but the entire upgrade gives a significant improvement in SQ!! the key points that I hear are even more air than before, now it is as if the space embraces you and takes you to the room where the music actually plays out, also the width of the spatial image is now more outside the speakers and also more forward , the naturalness is also very impressive !!

All in all, I was already very happy with the CS2.4 but after the upgrades I now have speakers that I never thought I could own :-)
Jafant,

Thanks :)

I am not a guy who can write a good description about how something sounds, I can tell you that my Thiel's sounds best ever out of this world good to me IMHO, and it does!!, but this is for sure no reference to others, it's the same for me when I read sound descriptions from others, there is simple no reference for me to compare.

My brother is also a audio freak like me and we know from each other how our systems sounds, he knows directly what I mean when I say how something has improved because he has a reference ;)
beetlemania,

As you can see I had no problem to upload some pictures,  but it's time consuming compared to what I normally have to do on other forums, it's also unfortunately that there is no option to share pictures on the topics itself.

Regarding your upgraded crossovers, I totally understand what you are going thru, like I said before the 2.4 is performing out of this world so good!! after the crossover upgrade.

As we speak, I am now working on the internal Supra wirering with grounding, hopefully with a positive result.

Tomthiel,
At least for one loudspeaker I found out the serial number, it's 1446

Upgraded the internal wirering with Supra Ply 3.4/s cable's and also grounded the coax crossover backside, coax and woofer frames, crossovers are placed on the side wall's to gain more distance between them and shorter wirering, low mid and high details and imaging are improved and got more air overall, bass is clearly tighter.

Tomthiel,

I planned that when my brother is here again and will post the outcome here.
Used Google translate to write this so hope it's all clear to you guys.

The diameter of the Supra Ply 3.4/S cable outer sheath is 8mm, I have removed the plastic tube that contained the coax wire and the existing holes are then drilled to 8.5mm with an angle screwdriver, where the cable enters the coax chamber I glued it with a PU TIX Express from Bostik, first I have the cable extended further then glued and then retracted the cable thru the hole again so that the hole itself is also provided with glue, immediately afterwards I sprayed some water with a plant spray to accelerate the drying process, later I tested the closure by pressing the passive woofer with a good result, totally no movement at the coax, the remaining holes are also drilled to 8.5mm so that the wires are supported there too, this time without glue.

The Ply 3.4 / S cable has two 3,4mm2 (OFC) cores, these cores are far too thick to fit into the holes of the coax and woofer terminals, these are soldered neatly direct on the plus and min terminals, the terminal supports of the coax and the woofer are attached to the units with a bolt, the earthed wires are secured to them so the frames are also grounded.

I have placed the gold plated earth terminal airtight through a 3mm hole between the two +/- connections, at the rear is a thin gold plated solder plate fixed to the m3 bolt.

Good luck beetlemania, it's worth it!!
And be prepared for a tighter and more detailed bass ;-)
Today I made a recording of my installation with the song Takla Makan by Yello, sound recording was made with a Tascam DR-40 v2 in the format WAV 24bit-48k, the video is just from my phone.

Now is You-Tube not the most suitable medium for sound and often there is no option to listen to it optimally via the equipment You-Tube plays, so also a link from the original sound file for download so you can directly put the file in your music streamer for the best result.
This recording gives only an impression and is far from how it sounds 1: 1 but I thought it would be nice to share it.

beetlemania,

Believe me, the Wax coils are the icing on the cake in the whole picture!!

Equal to the coax, the upper bass / low mids in the room now places more up front and outside the speakers and the bass / low mids has more weight / push and detail, the Wax coils clearly!! show an improvement with every kind of music in the lower regions, music with low voices like for example Leonard Cohen sounds really freaking good.

I am totally happy with how the speakers are performing now, by default I was already very impressed with the CS2.4 but now they perform at a totally different level!! what I want to say more is that there is absolutely no sharpness or rawness to hear, rather the opposite!! with still the beautiful Thiel character present.
tomthiel,

Greate move!! I am very curious about what you think of the Jantzen wax coils.
I made a new recording of my CS2.4 with now also the Jantzen wax coils mounted.
The recording is made twice, 1 time with the Thiel's connected to earth and 1 time without the earth connection, the recording is mixed so that every 30sec is switched between the two recordings, you can also see that in the picture if there is or not a ground wire to be seen next to the speakers.

I do not hear a difference myself, but it could be that the speakers first have to play a week without the earth wire to hear a difference, who knows ........

Beetlemania,

Yes I here good things about the Dutch&Dutch loudspeaker, for sure I will listen to them one day, after all they are designed in my country 😉

The CS 2.4 are still sounding great, at this moment enjoying holidays in Portugal 🌞🌞🌞
Beetlemania

It's about the fastest (motion feedback) subwoofer money can buy, and I will also use it for AV.

I use an Audio GD Master 3 power amp on my CS 2.4 loudspeakers with IMHO great results on any loudspeaker I ever had.

Review of the Master 10, same power amp but with a preamp integrated.

For those looking for good equipment to power their Thiels speakers without robbing the bank ;-)

Thorough review by Christiaan Punter regarding the following components of Audio-GD (exactly the same set I use)

Audio-GD Master-1 preamplifier
Audio-GD Master-3 power amplifier
Audio-GD R8 ladder DAC

https://www.hifi-advice.com/blog/review/digital-reviews/spdif-dac-reviews/audio-gd-part1/

Conclusion

I’ll be honest: I think that the R8 DAC is the star of the show, sounding very nearly as good as the Aqua Formula xHD DAC which given its low price is an amazing achievement. But don’t assume that the Master 1 preamp and Master 3 power amp are mere bystanders. This pre-power pair also offers extremely good value for money, delivering a combination of transparency, neutrality, and even-handedness that is normally impossible in this price class. I think you can easily spend double the amount and not get better sound. But the most amazing aspect of all is perhaps the further increase in performance when all the components are wired using the proprietary ACSS connections, giving the system such a leap in performance that it becomes impossible to fault, even in the company of esoteric hardware. Oh, and should you still be worried about the build quality of these products then the 10-year (!) warranty should instill confidence.
