Like I said before, an upgraded cdp is by far the best money spent in audio equipment.(Except for the Nuforce 9.02 amps maybe). They are absolutely awesome for the money. For about a 4k investment you might find yourself doing back flips in your listening room.
The "best" I have heard to date is my upgraded Denon 2900. I have not heard a stock player yet that sounds better. So to me it is "best" so far. I have even had the Ultimate modded Marantz SA11 im my system and I did not have to turn the Denon on for comparisons.
Aplhifi, How does your APL Denon solid state design compare to your tubed output stage with AKM DAC's? Is your solid state unit actually better in your opinion? If you think the solid state design is better then I would agree that it would be more fair to compare the 3930 to that unit. Or are you saying solid state units should not be compared to tubed units period?
Crem1, Jazz22 started the thread back in 2000, since then he has been divorced twice and was shot by his second wife for trying to trade her in for a better cdp. The first wife I think ended up with the better system. At least that is the way I heard it. However, the OPPO's are getting some recognition.
Definetely hard to beat modified or upgraded units for the money. I have not heard too many stock players but I have heard players ranging from 5 to over 10k in my system and they don't compete with a real good upgraded player.
Zackattack420, please tell us more about the differences you heard between your CD-2008 mkII and the transport-DAC combos. Plus which modifier did you use?
IMO, the best players for the money are not stock players as the one upgraded/modified player I have pretty much embarrassed the one box wonder and another heavy weight that retails for 14k. Not bad for spending $3500.
I don't know where the name redbook came from but it is a standard cd format. Not high resolution format.
