Tekton Double Impacts

Anybody out there heard these??

I have dedicated audio room 14.5x20.5x9 ft.  Currently have Marantz Reference CD/Intergrated paired to Magnepan 1.7's with REL T-7 subs.  For the vast majority of music I love this system.  The only nit pick is that it is lacking/limited in covering say below 35 hz or so.  For the first time actually buzzed the panel with an organ sacd. Bummer.  Thought of upgrading subs to rythmicks but then I will need to high pass the 1.7's.  Really don't want to deal with that approach.

Enter the Double Impacts.  Many interesting things here.  Would certainly have a different set of strengths here.  Dynamics, claimed bottom octave coverage in one package, suspect a good match to current electronics.

I've read all the threads here so we do not need to rehash that.  Just wondering if others out there have FIRST HAND experience with these or other Tekton speakers

Thanks.

Hello All - Not to barge in with a sales pitch, but just to keep you in the loop...

Audio Archon is an authorized dealer for Tekton Designs in the Chicago area.  We are working with Eric Alexander from Tekton to have upgraded versions of their wonderful speakers here to audition.  The base models will be sold through Tekton direct and the upgraded versions through dealers.

We expect to have our "upgraded" Double Impacts here shortly.

In addition, we are an authorized dealer for Linear Tube Audio (ZOTL) and also some top quality 300b SET amps.  So if interested to hear the Tekton speakers, we can put together a nice combination for the audition.

As mentioned (disclaimer)...WE ARE A DEALER. :o)

Thanks!

Hi mac48025!

We are still discussing with Tekton on the upgrades...and will share when we have the details (which should be next week).  After we have the details we can finalize the price. I know you were just guessing, but it will be MUCH less than the $30k that you mentioned. This will be a nice upgrade and still be priced so most audio enthusiasts can afford it.

Thanks!

Note - We are a dealer ;o)

Hello klh007 & Co -

From talking with Eric at Tekton, the items you mentioned are what I believe to be the "Upgraded" package (also premium paint).  Eric is still working on this, so waiting to hear the changes as well as the pricing.  We will keep everyone in the loop when we have the answers.

Cheers!

Hi Bob - You will have opportunity to hear the upgraded DI and even with the Linear Tube MZ2 directly...soon!  I am interested in your thoughts and comments after!

Hi diofan56 -

We would really like to help out, but our Tekton DI SE's are not ready yet.  So we will not have them at AXPONA.  Perhaps if you are in the Chicago-area you could come over to test them once they arrive (and after we have a chance to put some hours on them).

Will post again once they are here and ready!

Thanks!

Hello All -

The Tekton Double Impact SE's have arrived!  We only have a few hours on them, so still playing around with some break-in hours and setup.

More later on our findings...

Cheers!

Hello All -

I just talked with Eric from Tekton.  The pair that we have are more of a pre-release SE.  The reason is, the SE is a different speaker and will have completely different drivers.  Some of the custom drivers are not yet available.  The pair that we have has the new mid-woofers, but the woofers and tweeters are the same as the original. The SE also includes an upgraded crossover, internal wiring, binding posts and premium finish.

Eric confirmed the price will be $6000 for the SE.

Sonically, I am very impressed so far.  Today, I am actually driving with the LTA Micro ZOTL2 (with a whopping 1 watt of power) directly to the DI-SE...with amazing sound!  Who knew 6SN7's would be a great power tube?  I am not saying they won't sound better with more power, I just wanted to run the experiment to see how (and if) it would work...WOW!

More later...

Hi David - No problem...and regret any confusion. I will stop posting about them until we get the full SE.

Thanks for your comments.

Hi David_ten -

I had a similar question for Tekton a few days ago.  Eric told me the following:
He is not a big fan of having his speakers far apart, as it robs some dynamics.  At the shop, he listens to the speakers about 6 feet apart center to center. (6-8 feet center to center works very well)

As far as distance from the speakers, start at an equilateral triangle.  This is not the best final location, only a starting point.  Then keep moving them back until images start locking in.  I have found a factor of about 1.3-1.4 from the speaker to your ear/head works well.  This means if your speakers are 7 feet apart, the distance from the speaker to you will be around 9-10 feet.

Toe-in...Eric told me he uses this as sort of a tone control.  The more you toe them in the hotter/brighter they get, so you can use this to get the right amount of highs that work for your room and listening preference.

When I first, pulled the speakers from the boxes I wanted to be able to move them around easily, so the first few hours I did not have the spikes on them...I was disappointed in the sound.  Putting the factory spikes made a huge difference (and I'm sure there are other solutions that can give even better results).

As a dad, I would not put the speakers on a non-fixed type of platform/stand/spikes/etc with a 3 year old running around.  The speakers are just too big and heavy if something happens.

Happy listening!

All this talk about Herbie's Sliders I had to try a pair!  Heck, even if they don't sound better, being able to slide speakers around is a huge plus!

Anyway, will post our findings once received.

Thanks!

We have switched over to the Concert Fidelity i300B SET for the last week and hearing fantastic results.  So yes, a ~10watt 300b SET amplifier is a great match too!

Happy Listening!

Hi kdude66 -

Those look like scanspeaks, not SBs to me on the new "blue" Ulfbehrt on the Tekton page.  I'll share more details shortly!

Thanks!

mac48025 - I learned from Eric/Tekton that we can sell the Ulfberhts at Audio Archon.  However, they are much larger than the Double Impact and not sure how much space is needed yet?  Especially, since the DIs work so well in our rooms!  If/when we get a pair you are very welcome to stop by for a listen!

Thanks!

Hey mac48025 - Since we can sell the Ulfberht, I suppose we will get a pair!  So stay tuned!

kdude66 - I keep missing Eric, but if I have it right the SE will indeed fill the gap, between the DI and the Ulberht.  The SE will have upgraded everything over the standard DI and it looks like the Ulfberht already has upgraded everything from the start.

cmss2000 - I agree there is no product that is for everyone.  However, we now have good experience with setup, placement and tested lots of  equipment with the DI.  Perhaps we can help you optimize the setup?  If you wish to discuss further, feel free to PM or call.

Thanks!

Hello all -

Just keeping everyone in the loop, the specifications for the Ulfbehrt are now available on the "PMD" section of the Tekton Design website.

Eric/Tekton also shared that one pair of the Ulfberhts has been sold and they are ready to sell more!

We are still waiting on the "new" tweeters for the Double Impact SE.  To re-confirm the DI-SE will be the model between the DI and the Ulfberht.

Thanks!
Mike

Hi mdlofnwhr - We tested with the Lumin M1 integrated amp/network player (class D amp).  I went in with low expectations, but was a bit shocked at how good the results were (which is always nice).  I would give the DI's a try with a class D amp...you may be surprised also.

Guys - I'm blushing...didn't expect that!  But many thanks about the power cords!

Hello All -

As mentioned, we have the first pair of Double Impact SE speakers being produced now (in painting at the moment) for a local customer (Chicago area).

The DI SE is a completely different speaker than the standard DI.  Thinking back we probably should have named it something else to eliminate any confusion.

Sure we have some insight as to the differences, but in a week or two the DI-SE should be finished and we can give you facts. We tried to get things moving about 6 months ago (when I believed the DI SE was going to be ready)...which led to many phone calls, questions and no product! I am not doing that again until we have all the pieces of the puzzle.

Thanks and stay tuned!

Double Impact SE - "The Eagle has Landed!"

Setup the very first pair of Double Impact SE speakers today!  Even on my own, I had the speakers unboxed and setup in about 30 minutes.  Out of the box, the paint quality is very nice and the best I have seen Tekton do to date.

The customer had some old sound craftsman amplifiers, which actually sounded pretty good on the DI-SE.  Then we tested with the Linear Tube Audio MicroZOTL2 (and a whopping 1 watt of power) with great results!  We also tried using the MicroZOTL2 as a pre-amp with Consonance  2A3 amplifier which also sounded fantastic.

Eric and Tekton did it again with another winner!  For me they are exactly what I was hoping for...a more refined version of an already great speaker (DI).  Can't wait to get our pair!

Hi david_ten - Allen measured the depth because they did not look any deeper...I believed they measured 19" deep vs. the standard DI @ 17.75".  Let me ask Eric about the other specs and will post.

Thanks!

Hello All -

Double Impact SE update:

As most of you know the Double Impact SE is now complete and started shipping.

Size - confirmed it's approximately an 1" deeper than the standard version.  All other dimensions remain the same.

Price - Rather than having different price options for paint...your choice of piano gloss black or white finish or any German or Italian matched automotive paint color for $6500.

Lead-Time - At the moment Tekton is quoting 6-8 weeks lead time for the DI-SE.  Of course they will try to improve on this time if possible.

Feel free to call or e-mail with any other questions.

Cheers!

Hi Eric -

They key to getting everything sounding right with a speaker like the 1812 is perfect room symmetry.

I think this statement is much overlooked, but holds true for many speakers!

Thanks!
Hey Bullitt5094 - Am I reading this correctly...you preferred the Lyngdorf without the room correct vs with?  Essentially, running it as a standard class D amp?

Thanks!
Mike
Audio Archon - Tekton dealer
Hi bullitt5094 - you mentioned the following:
"the transducer centers are a 1.5ft from the side walls and 2.5ft from the rear wall."
Since the DI speakers are 12" wide and ~18" deep, going from the transducer centers that would mean you have a about a foot to the side walls from speaker edge and a foot to the front wall (wall behind speakers and in front of the listener) from the back of the speaker.

If this is right, essentially, the speakers would be corner loaded.  In such a setup I believe that you preferred a class D amp over a tube amp.

Thanks for sharing!

Hello all -

The Tekton Double Impact Special Edition (SE) has arrived at Audio Archon!  When first hearing the speakers at a local customer install about two months ago, my initial read was more refined on the top end and slightly fuller (more visceral) sound overall compared to the standard Double Impact.  Even fresh out of the box, I heard the same as at the customer's house immediately!

More later...

Hello All -
Many thanks for the positive feedback (I feel like it's Valentines Day)!

Audio Archon has been in business for about 14 years and 2 years ago we decided to take the plunge and do audio full time (instead of evenings and weekends).  It has always been a dream of mine and you have helped make my dream a reality!  Could not have done it without you!  THANKS!
