Tekton Double Impacts

Anybody out there heard these??

I have dedicated audio room 14.5x20.5x9 ft.  Currently have Marantz Reference CD/Intergrated paired to Magnepan 1.7's with REL T-7 subs.  For the vast majority of music I love this system.  The only nit pick is that it is lacking/limited in covering say below 35 hz or so.  For the first time actually buzzed the panel with an organ sacd. Bummer.  Thought of upgrading subs to rythmicks but then I will need to high pass the 1.7's.  Really don't want to deal with that approach.

Enter the Double Impacts.  Many interesting things here.  Would certainly have a different set of strengths here.  Dynamics, claimed bottom octave coverage in one package, suspect a good match to current electronics.

I've read all the threads here so we do not need to rehash that.  Just wondering if others out there have FIRST HAND experience with these or other Tekton speakers

Thanks.

Well the incredible reviews and high praise from fellow audiogon members has weakened me so. I just bought a pair of Electrons (mid tower version of DI) Soft White/Grills and Upgraded Parts. I hope they aren't too aggressive in the mids and highs. I will have them about 2 feet from the back wall, playing at lower volumes (60-65db) with a sub. I have a Primaluna Dialogue Premium to power them. Wish me luck! I estimate delivery to be 3-4 weeks. Will report back with impressions. Thanks guys and gals $$$$ :o
Well I would imagine that the 5 year warranty covers crumbling dust caps? I mean this is kinda pathetic to be honest lol. More power to you if you can just put the grills on your speaker and be ok with it. If a dust cap on my speaker that I just ordered 2 days ago even slightly showed a hint it was dented, the speaker would be going back immediately.
@terpstation

I would respond to the email you got when you ordered the Electrons. By responding your email will go to the manager who organizes the orders. Confirm that your order will include the 8" Drivers, if that is what you want.

Eric will most likely install (2) 8" drivers, but he will also install (2) 6" if requested. After talking with Eric we felt it was best to go with the 8" for the extra bass. If you like real tight bass, he recommends the 6" driver, which he can install if you want.

I would estimate the speakers will take 2-3 weeks to make for standard finish. At least that is what I was told just this weekend.

Eric told me over the phone, that he feels the Electrons are just as good as the Di’s.

Also you want to make sure you ear is level with the Middle tweeter. The Electrons cabinet is now 48" tall vs 46". With the Base and the Spikes the tweeter is now 40" high.

As far as the Electrons size are concerned. The only thing size-wise that has changed is the height. That is what Eric told me over the phone.

Note: The Enzo 2.7 use 8" drivers and they have almost the same width and depth as the Electrons.
Question: Has anyone compared 4" midrange drivers to 6"? What were your findings?
@racer12b

Take your butt out of here. Nothing constructive with your post, just being a weak troll. Bye!
@evolvist

Ok first of all. Why would someone buy a entire HT speaker system without hearing the product first? That's why companies like Tekton have a trial period. Did he try and return the speakers? He never mentioned that did he? He created account on Audiogon a few weeks ago and all he is doing is spewing stuff that no one knows if it is true or not. Ok? So now what...Eric is going to have to stop working on your Mini Ulfs to defend this claim that supposedly happened years ago from this stranger :P

I just ordered a pair of Electrons 6 days ago. If I don't get them in the quoted 2-3 weeks. I will choose not to come here to bash Tekton. I am goin call Eric or Karma and have a chat to straightened out the situation. Just a choice I have made. Some people might want to consider doing that next time.

When Porscheracer had the issue with the dented dust caps. I 100% supported him. Even though it wasn't Tekton's fault. He claimed he tried to get a hold of the company to get assistance and he got not response. At the same time we don't know Tekton's side of the story. Lucky for us Eric reads the forum and responded. Oh wait...he just took more time away from your Mini Ulfs.
I should be receiving my Lyngdorf 2170 today. I don’t have my Tekton Electrons yet, but I am excited to hear how this amp performs with my current set up. I also did buy this amp because of Grannyring’s endorsement. I don’t want to thank Grannyring just yet, since I have not heard it :)

Tonight my family unfortunately will be finalizing our preparations for this monster of a storm headed right for us in Florida. I imagine my electricity will be out for a few to several days. I will update as soon as I can. Take care everyone!
@213runnin

If you go to the about section on youtube it says... "I'm just a nerd who loves music and the gear that makes it sound awesome."

Just a quick update for those that ordered Electrons. Tekton is still waiting for 8" woofers to arrive hopefully tomorrow and Eric apparently is still tweaking. I was told another 2 more weeks. I ordered them 3 weeks ago. Can’t wait to hear them. Peace out!
@ lpretiring

Same as you, I don't want them unless they are 100% completely ready. I will await your update. Thanks
I would like to call out Response Audio as someone who makes great tube pre amp/amp products with high quality parts at reasonable prices. Consider them as well.
Quote From Eric’s Blog -https://tektondesign.wordpress.com/2009/11/02/full-range-driver-break-in%E2%80%A6/

Full-range break-in – what you need to know: All pistonic-type transducers have a very clear and predictable rate of change that occurs within the first few hours and within the extended hours of initial break-in. In the realm of credible transducer engineering, we see major changes (10-15%) occuring within the first 1-15 hours of break-in. This is the period where the major shifts normally occur. Beyond 15 hours, in a properly functioning and typical device, the process really slows down and small, incremental changes are typically observed over time.

The Key: When a new transducer’s soft parts (cone, surround, spider, etc.) are crisp and tight, there is a specific level of transverse friction within a number of parts in the transducer. Once we get the driver working through its effective range of motion (far from linear), the transverse friction levels immediately begin to predictably drop, and the piston moves more and more smoothly with less and less resistance.

The full-range mystery: The break-in process (with all of its negative attributes) simply happens to be most intrinsically connected to, and is most audibly discerned through a full-range transducer. This is because a full range simply has the ability to augment the very subtle higher frequency centered distortions, squeaks, and squawks that a crisp new speaker is capable of producing. Once again, if it is a full-range speaker and if it sounds bad out of the box, don’t wait for a miracle to happen; send it straight back to whomever you got it from because the speaker has serious problems. If it sounds quite good but has a very subtle graininess, or a few mild distortions, or the sound is crisp but still pleasant, then you’ve got a keeper! Sit back and be patient, and you will be pleasantly rewarded within 15-20 hours of moderate playback levels – this amount of break-in time will get you to about 80%-complete break-in. Beyond that, a functionally full and nearly complete break-in period of 200+ hours is quite reasonable and is to be expected.

Much more on this subject to follow…

Eric Alexander

I invite you to read the review I linked to. Goes into what the Lyngdorf is and how its a different animal.
@porscheracer

Not trying to convince you to buy one, but the Lyngdorf is a digital amp, not really a true Class D amp nor should it be in the same category as others.

Quote from a review from http://hometheaterhifi.com/reviews/amplifier/integrated-amplifiers/lyngdorf-audio-tdai-2170-fully-di...

"Lyngdorf Audio TDAI-2170 Fully-Digital Integrated Amplifier Review Highlights

Integrated amplifiers have never enjoyed the same respect audiophiles pay to separate components. Similarly, Class D amplification has been the “Scarlet Letter” of the high-end audio realm due to a sea of mass-market amplifiers that make more “noise” than “music”. Borrowing heavily from technologies developed for the cost-no-object Steinway Lyngdorf audio systems (yes, THAT Steinway) the TDAI-2170 aims not to simply level the high-end audio playing field, but to flip it on its head entirely. Fundamentally different from traditional Class D amplifiers, the sleek TDAI-2170 produces a sound so clean, so neutral, so devoid of any sonic signature, it disappears completely and restores the emotional response that made me fall in love with music to begin with."

@vitop

I agree 100%. I was coming from a more technical standpoint. I don't think the Lyngdorf has a sonic signature like most people put on Class D. Icy, cold and sterile.
@evolvist

I cannot find pricing for this Linn system. Can you tell me how much it would cost retail? Thanks
It would be helpful also if people would better describe the comparisons, instead of "destroys" or "miles better" than said product. That doesn’t do anything for me. Hopefully we can get more info?
@mac48025

I am currently listening to the new Electrons. Not sure I liked the Western Electric 10ga with them. I believe you used them? I found them a bit harsh on top and lean in upper bass, lower midrange. Then again when I came up with this assessment as I was still breaking in the Tektons. I once borrowed a set of CT GE speaker cables for 2 months. They were too laid back for my speakers at the time, but I can see them working GREAT with the DI’s or Electrons.

I am currently using the Wireworld Eclipse 5.2 and they seem to have a nice balance with the Electrons.
@jayctoy

I use the WE 10ga cables with my Electrons. If I didn’t have that cable in my arsenal I would be returning the Electrons.

I do agree that from my experience the Cerious Tech cables would be a great match with the Tektons.
@sbayne

I felt the other speaker cables I had at my disposal did not gel well with everything in my system. I was experiencing way too much upper midrange and high frequencies with the Electrons installed. My old speakers (Eminent Technology) had a more laidback presentation. When adding the WE cables, I felt like I added a warm tube. It pushed back the soundstage to midhall and eliminated the nasties that were making my ears miserable (I have tinnitus). I am sure other cables like the Cerious Tech would work great as well. I am in the camp that believes cables do influence the sound. Some don’t. No debates :)

I wasn’t about to buy more cables to figure out how to make the Electrons work in my room, so I was lucky to have the WE cables available. Yes it came down to a wire. A $60 wire lol

I also wanted to take the time to thank the great posters here that have helped assist me in making my system sound the way it does presently. You know who you are.

@facten

Its very easy, you buy a percentage gauge meter, record the sound and it calculates a percentage. Not rocket science dude. :P
I think Home Depot has a End of Summer Sale on some grills if Tekton cant provide them. :P
@evolvist

My speakers are set using the provided spikes into Herbie Hush Puckies.
I agree about the room correction. I seem to have enough bass in general. Was just curious if DI owners have bass with resolution? You need upper to mid bass otherwise its not going to be easy to follow complex passages. Most posters seem to comment on how Dynamic the bass is or isn’t.

Another Track :
Paul Simon’s "You can call me Al"
Genesis "No reply at all"
Double Impact owners I need your opinion on bass performance.
I want to know if your satisfied with bass resolution and texture? Can you pick up bass guitar notes easily or are they on the soft side? Either acoustic bass of electric. Do any of you listen to Jaco, Geddy, Jack Bruce, John Entwhistle, Ron Carter etc? Thanks
@greg22lz

The Police "Spirits in the Material World"
Yes "Owner of a Lonely Heart" "Roundabout"
Rush "Limelight"
Cream "White Room" "Badge"

@greg22lz

While these are not Diana Krall quality recordings, you should have a good sense of bass guitar notes and texture being heard in the mix on these tracks. At least I know I heard them very clearly on my old speakers.
@greg22lz

The bell sound coming from the right channel? Yes. Glad to hear the bass is working for you. I was just curious what other owners thought. Enjoy
@grannyring

I bet they sound much better than the SE’s :)

I would like to note that those with the Lyngdorf 2170 try a 90% Romm Perfect reading instead of a 99 or 100%. In my room it was taking a bit too much bass away so with 90% I have more lower mids and bass. Thanks evolvist for the suggestion.
I guess it makes sense that the better the speaker, the less correction it needs. And the worse the speaker, the more of a change you’ll notice.
Not sure I agree with that. I think it depends on the design of the speaker. I had Dipoles and they actually were not designed to need a lot of room correction. My Electrons required much more room correction. Was the dipole speaker better than the Tekton? Not to me.
@tektondesign

" We're also now producing the wide-polar response version that sounds fantastic."

Can you elaborate on this please?
@ozzy

Just a guess, but since it’s November it is only going to get worse as you get deeper into the month. Good Luck and my the schwartz be with you :)
At $16,000 the Devialet D-Premier should sound better than a amp at $4,000 -5k
Thanks for your input James.
The only issue I have with Teajay’s statement is, just because I like a D Class amp I won’t be interested in the amps listed below.
Maybe teajay hasn't read some of the posts from tube admirer's that love the Lyngdorf enough?. I know I have heard Solid State/Tube amps that sound much more mechanical and less involving compared to the Lyngdorf
@teajay

I personally have not read any posts in regards to you trying the Lyngdorf or any D Class amp with the Double Impact speakers. Can you lead me to that post or page? I am just curious as I don't have the luxury of experiencing as many amps as you. Thanks
@jcarcopo

Just like the Double Impacts the Lyngdorf is not going to appeal to everyone. Heck I bought mine used from a Reviewer that used it with the Pendragons. He sold it because he thought it sounded harsh at high volumes. I am glad he did :)
Cliff not be rude. But questions like this can EASILY be found by just typing in Google Search.

"tekton double impacts picture" in google search. Picture of the ports!
OMG My Grills Shipped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I definitely want to know what that resistor mod thing is about. But then again it’s NO mystery that all DI’s are not built the same. Just read Grannyrings later posts.
Got a question for Tekton Speaker Owners with Grills. I just received my grills for my Electrons. The grills are well built. However, they don’t seem like they fit the shape of the speaker cabinet. The corners of the grills are not flush with the corners of the speaker cabinet. The Speakers Cabinets have a rounded corner yet the Grills have a sharp corner, so the grill corners are sticking out a bit. Is this what you all have as well? Thanks
@kristofa

You can also try raising the back of the speakers with the adjustable feet so the tweeter array points down a bit towards you.

The tweeter height was an issue for me and was one of the reasons why I chose the Electrons over the DI's.
@nitrobob

Thanks for your honest and interesting write up on the Tektons. I don’t think you rubbed anyone the wrong way at all. You seemed like you tried everything you had at your disposal. For me though I had to make a decent amount of changes in my system to get what I wanted from the Tektons. Some people (grannyring) had to modify the speakers. Some just placed them in the room and magic!

Have you thought about trying Model 3a signature Vandersteen speakers? Not the most efficient but they have 10" woofers. When I heard them I thought they had a warm natural character, but the highs had nice amount of detail. Not only that, but they have tweeter and mid controls on them, to fine tune them. There is a fine line with warm and super crisp highs though, so keep that in mind. You can’t really have both...sorta a middle ground. At least that is from my experience. Anyways Vandersteen came to mind, I am sure others might have other examples for you to try.

Best of luck and thanks.
