Tekton Double Impacts

Anybody out there heard these??

I have dedicated audio room 14.5x20.5x9 ft.  Currently have Marantz Reference CD/Intergrated paired to Magnepan 1.7's with REL T-7 subs.  For the vast majority of music I love this system.  The only nit pick is that it is lacking/limited in covering say below 35 hz or so.  For the first time actually buzzed the panel with an organ sacd. Bummer.  Thought of upgrading subs to rythmicks but then I will need to high pass the 1.7's.  Really don't want to deal with that approach.

Enter the Double Impacts.  Many interesting things here.  Would certainly have a different set of strengths here.  Dynamics, claimed bottom octave coverage in one package, suspect a good match to current electronics.

I've read all the threads here so we do not need to rehash that.  Just wondering if others out there have FIRST HAND experience with these or other Tekton speakers

Thanks.

speaking of open and airy ribbons, have you heard the Legacy Aeris? If you haven't, you should.
Evolvist --

That's great! You need some speakers so I think that was a good route to go.

Finding a bureaucrat at the customs office should not bee too difficult. Kind of like sand on the beach. If you mean a helpful bureaucrat, well then.... that's a different story.
I’ll be rolling different vintage carafes to see which one makes the coffee tastes better. Looking for a discontinued pear shaped one from the 30’s. I am sure it will make the coffee taste smoother and more liquid.
Waltersales:

This sounds like just the ticket. A military grade carafe. Now I need to find an imported one.

$8000.00 sounds reasonable. Those things don't just grow on trees. aw hell.... Now I need one that grows on trees so I can see how a biodegradable one will change the taste.

I agree -- I think I would really enjoy that aspect of the job too. Now I just need to find your counterpart for HT.

Problem is that I don'\t even know if "boutique" players exist for processors because of the complexity, various licensing for different multi-channel playback, etc. There may be some for multi channel amps but the processors are (IMO) a tough product for a one person setup to do the R&D on and stay current.
Has anyone else heard the Vaughn speakers with plasma tweeter? How are they compared to the Tekton tweeter array?
IMO, people get too wound up into  "is it a tube or is it SS", when IMO the question should be "is it good and do I like it?" I bet in some double blind tests, people that swear their allegiance to one or the other would get a few of them wrong.

Of course, anyone has the right to say "I only want to spend my money on this type of equipment", but there is some really good stuff out there on both sides of the aisle.
Terry, no one wanted to rain on your parade. We just thought you had renamed them the Single Impact. Never stop a guy when he’s on a roll!
Eric is pretty picky about the sound he wants. I honestly don't think he would make a choice just to save a few bucks. I agree with Mac. If Eric chose the drivers, I am more than comfortable with them. It also sounds like now he has enough buying power to specify Tekton specific drivers to get him even closer to what he wants.

Maybe anyone with concerns can discuss more what any specific concerns might be? I'd be interested to hear that. I think it would be a good topic.
jcarcopo:

Thanks for the info. Eric might have changed direction then. I've been waiting for a speaker smaller than the Ulbert but with the same double tweeter array. I guess I need to touch base and see if that is now off the design table. Those Ulfs are just way too big for me.

Has anyone heard the  GoldenEar Triton Reference Loudspeaker?

I'm looking for speakers that are pretty thin that would fit into my environment, but I am thinking I'd give up a lot in sound moving from the Tektons. Anyone heard them both? I might try to see if I can find a pair to listen to. Their center does not impress me much though.

The Legacy Audio line has some really good sounding speakers when you get into the higher end and their centers sound really good also.

That Vaughn plasma tweeter has me interested also, but the only speaker that has it integrated is their highest end one and then there are still two outboard power supplies and they don't have a real across the board HT line.
hifiman5:

No, I meant a center speaker in a HT setup. I am probably one of the few on the list that is looking for a HT speaker solution. Most are 2 channel people.

Yeah, I doubt that the Golden Ears would be better than the Tektons, but they fit and they are available. The problem is that the center speaker is pivotal in HT and I don't like their offering there. I think too many companies put something out there without realizing how important that speaker is.

One of my previous finalists was the Persona line of speakers by Paradigm. They put a lot of money into their center. They really have a nice center. It was going to actually be better than the L & R speakers I was going to pair it with. IMO, that is the way HT should be. I want to have a L& R that can hold it's own with music also, but the Persona speakers just get too expensive (for me) when you get into the really nice L& R speakers.

Then I heard the Tektons and thought that was the total package -- they have both.

I’ve located a couple of dealers here in Houston for the T Ref. I’ll probably go listen to them. In your opinion, how much would I give up from the Tektons if I went with them? The narrow configuration work well for me.
thanks cardiffkook

I am going to listen to them, but what you are saying in no way surprises me. Eric makes one hell of a speaker. Supposedly the Triton Reference is much better than the previous Tritons but I suspected I would be giving up a lot from the Tektons.

Not a bad idea. The cabinets are large. He could trap quite a few boobies in them.
Mac:
My thought process is similar to yours (which should scare you).

If the sound is there, that's all that matters to me. I have seen some food dishes made with some of the very best and most expensive ingredients money can buy and sometimes they were meh, sometimes they were sublime and sometimes I downright did not like them.

The same is true of less expensive ingredients. It depends on how you cool it, the combination of ingredients and how you season it.

In other words, when paying for a great tasting meal, sometimes the most important parts are not the ingredients, but the knowledge of the chef. It it tastes better than a meal with better ingredients, I submit you would still choose that one because you like it better.

I think the same is true with the Tektons. First, not all companies want the same markup for their components. Some good components are inherently cheaper ti buy because the companies sell for less markup. So Eric may be getting good components that just simply cost less. He makes that decision with his ears.

And his tweeter array seems to have the right stuff to the point that it beats most other speakers with very expensive tweeters and midranges. It is the secret recipe and his trademark.

If it sounds better, it is worth more to me. If it sounds better and is even cheaper, I'm not really going to look a gift horse in the mouth and wonder why there aren't more expensive parts in it to push up my cost.

That is also the issue for me in regards to the Ulfs. I LOVE the design with the double tweeter array but they are just too overwhelming. To be honest, the DI is larger than I'd like. But boy do they sound good!
There is a snob factor in both. I used to be a car collector. Had like 18 european cars at one time. Lots of snobs. If its an expensive car it must be better than an inexpensive car. And look at how much MY car cost!

I see lots of it in hi-fi too. Right now the Alfa is getting some reviewers to say that it is the best handling sedan made. However, that can't be right because there are more expensive sedans out there. Silly reviewers. We don't even need them. Just look at the price tags. It saves everyone lots of effort. And it helps the snobs keep score. I don;t need to drive any cars or listen to any speakers. I just have to know how much they cost. Keeps things very tidy.
David:

In concept I completely agree. But when opinions are presented based on one criteria (cost) with no actual personal experience...

And even when questioned, then continues the same rhetoric with no real argument (again, other than cost because it is the only criteria they know), I believe it is different than what you have in mind.

Open discussion such as someone not liking the speaker after listening to it is very valuable and worthy of discussion. Sadly, I have seen people get jumped on ANY time a negative comment is made, and I don’t agree with that either, but when a person has a belief that is close minded (ok with me) and just keeps parroting the same stuff regardless of people trying to engage, then I lose patience with it. I guess maybe I should just stay out of it, but as much as I love to understand different perspectives and how those perspectives were built, there has to be an actual engagement in ideology. not just hashing the same thing back again and again.

They must be better because they cost more as a recurring defense is not openness and engagement, and I am sorry if I offend anyone... it is not meant to.

If manufacturers fairly listened to competitors products and priced their own products based on how much better or worse than competitors, I guess that would be a start, but "better" has many criteria and each is subjective. And in no parallel universe is pricing done that way.

It is done based on cost of materials (and more costly materials are not always the best), company overhead, labor, desired profit, and quite frankly how much the market will bear based on the perception of the product. It is not unusual at all to find some more expensive products not being as good as less expensive competition. At the same time, sometimes the more expensive product IS the best. But to use only the price without even having heard it, does not promote any sort of credibility. To keep defending it with no more data than before is a waste of everyones time, not a suffocation of open discussion.

JMO, and sorry if I have offended. It is just how I feel.
Grannyring:
I have not heard the Cresendo Speakers.  They have a horn tweeter don't they? I'll have to find some to listen to. In the past I have preferred ribbon tweeters to horn tweeters but still something I should listen to based on your writeup.
There are so many really good speakers out there if you are looking for stereo. So few REALLY good speaker lines have a full HT line that I like.

All of these different speakers really gives me the itch to shop, shop, shop.
