@kennyc There is a Devore dealer 30 minutes from me…they usually have the O/baby set up, anything more expensive they won’t get them in unless you pay in full with no audition time..
will the O/baby be a good example?
Tannoy or Volti
I have a friend who has the Tannoy Prestige GRF 90 for sale he is moving out of the country for half price, he paid $29000 in around 2020 not made in China. I am upgrading my Forte IVs, I am also considering the Volti audio Lucera…anyone that has heard the Tannoy and any other suggestions which will be better would be appreciated….I have a few first watt amps and several tube amps…plus Jeff Rowland and Pass Labs amps..

@kennyc I am going to audition as many speakers as possible in my area, Devore and Legacy Focus SE are on my list so far…my Jeff Rowland 125 amp might fare well with the Legacy.. what are you using for amps Kennyc |
@earthbound Hello, ..I think that’s how Greg got started, did you read my day two with the Razz?..I am moving on from horns, being retired I listen all day most days and for the long run horns are just to bright..I am on the look for a more mellow speaker that will marry up to my low powered amps…so going to audition different speakers…I do have a Jeff Rowland 125 amp for more power..heading over to a Devore dealer tomorrow for a listen, and next day Legacy Focus SE..Taking the Fortes to a charity Friday…I do have a Naim Uniti Atom hooked to some bookshelf’s in the meantime until I find something… |
@sns I agree with your take on things, and looking at the systems you have, that’s a lot of gear. |
Kevin the guy I bought the Lucera from had Alan Eaton monos playing the Lucera when I got there, they sounded really good, he played a big variety of music. I brought the Sit-4 , we hooked it up took a walk around his place while it warmed up, started off in order with the same songs, it was night and day better, bigger, bolder more bass …Kevin is very intense, smart is a understatement, he has had a lot of low powered tube amps on the Lucera, and said out of the 50 or so solid state and tube amps over the years the Sit-4 is the best and wants one really bad for his Joseph Crowe 2087 speaker system. On my Pass Labs preamp 50 on the volume selector is perfect if you want sorta loud, I usually run in the 40s somewhere… |
@earthbound I have been going around and around with my hifi path and finally on a straight course with the few days, months, or years left. My tinnitus has been bothering me so I got all winged out and put my whole system up for sale luckily my wife brought me back to earth and said no way. I found a Lucera from a friend who went to a different builder, it’s glorious especially with my First Watt Sit-4, just amazing…my friend had the Alan Eaton monos hooked up them and after putting the Sit-4 in with his Aric preamp, he wants a Sit-4 also…more of everything with the Sit-4 without that tube sound…you would have to hear the Sit-4 to know and the other First Watt amps are not like the Sit-4…a little expensive at 5k…Jon at refined audio might be able to find you one.. I love the Lucera in Tineo veneer, it’s everything I have been looking for… |
@earthbound i met to say the Sit-4 with the tube sound in my previous post.. |
@earthbound i have the XA-25 also, it sounds really good but the Sit-4 takes it to the place you want to be. I use the XA-25 in the front mains of my home theater. For the final solid state with these speakers it’s the Sit-4, my old ears give me the measurements I need..plus the resistors you have on the back for adjustments is all I need.. I use the XP-12 Pass Labs preamp |
@earthbound The Sit-4 has a output impedance of 4 ohms a little hot, most amps are less then 1, not all speakers sound good, they sound floppy or something…Greg voices the speakers with his Cary tube amp, the Lucera loves the Sit-4. |
@earthbound Jon is a great guy, are you considering the Sit-4?..you won’t be unhappy…oh my it sounds so good…if you get it I am here for you if you have questions….you can private message me anytime…. The Lucera is so sweet the midrange gives me chills….I was having electrical issues just ran two separate circuits one for the home theater and one for the two channel. The two channel with the Sit-4 and Lucera holding steady at 120 volts..all good…. |
I love my whole set up every piece. Pass Labs XP-12 preamp, First Watt Sit-4, the streamer is very special the Magna HiFi Mano Ultra MkIII with a separate Farad power supply. You can change the software at anytime through a hole on the bottom of the streamer with a mini usb, I am using Ropieee XL software, the streamer comes from the Netherlands, it was the final piece of the puzzle when it come to the gear and has I2S that goes into my Denafrips Venus dac. Then the Lucera arrived, everything is firing on all cylinders….one piece leaves everything will fall apart.. |
@audition__audio lets forget horns and the Tannoy…what would a different approach be…something non-fatiguing…any ideas?…what do you have?… My amps, Pass Labs preamp Pass Labs XA-25, Pass Labs X250.8 First Watt Sit-3 First Watt SIT-1 Decware, Cary, Alan Eaton tube amps Jeff Rowland 125 |
@bodega Greg has a deal on his website for the Lucera, have you heard the difference between the Razz and Lucera? No audition period, |
@kofibaffour I definitely have the JBL 4367 on my must listen to list…I did have the L100 back in the early 70s…don’t remember the sound though.. |
@whiteknee I see Greg has a used Lucera at a marked down price and also a Razz marked down…how close is the Lucera to the Rival?…the Alan Eaton 2A3 monos with the Meitner MA3 Dac is my favorite set up…will I be kicking myself if I don’t go all the way with the Rival… |
@mulveling Just looked at your systems Mulveling, all I can say is wow and you definitely know what’s going on with Tannoy….if you had it to do over what speakers would you try?…. |
Thanks a lot for the write up about your journey, I am use to the Klipsch sound, trying lots of different amps for years I just never got there 100%, and money was always a problem but being retired now that’s not a problem. Yesterday I got to compare the Volti Razz the entry level speaker from Volti to the Klipsch Cornwall and an older Klipsch Forte, I have the Forte IV the newest version. |
They sounded really fine with the Alan Eatons Monos a couple watts..but the 10 watt First Watt Sit-4 was over the top good…thinking about my experience yesterday, the bass was perfect a good example was with this song by Deepjack Can’t Stop…and Robert Cristian Tell Me Why… The midrange horn I don’t know what he did to it but the music flows out effortlessly and fills the room and took me to my happy place, the song by Portico, Living Fields 101(feat. Joe Newman) sounds bright on the Forte but the Volti Razz is heavenly..the vocals on the song Perfect by Ed Sheeran is so clear and emotional it will make you love your wife again..lol Just beautiful… |
@helomech How would my amps do with the JBLs?..Alan Eaton monos, Pass Labs XA-25 First Watt Sit-3 and the Jeff Rowland 125…I need to find someway to listen to those..tell me why you like them more… |
I was just over reading the post you put in and you definitely have the right amp and preamp, I almost bought his gear. There is a Audio Note dealer close to me,I loved the sound but for me I would have to go all in with Audio note amps, dacs everything otherwise it didn’t do anything for me switching up with other brands to go with the Audio note speakers if that makes sense. |
@helomech Thanks, I will definitely listen to them before buying anything. I actually had a pair of JBL, L100 I think around early 1970 …I really appreciate you chiming in, several people have said the same thing about the JBLs..I will find a way, to listen to them.. |
I was really blown away when listening to the Razz a few days ago, have you listened to both Razz and Lucera, is there a big difference…the midrange horn in the Razz still has me thinking about it when playing the Forte IV…it’s like there is a sock in the Forte horn.. My friend who has the Razz was using the First Watt Sit-4, it really blew away my Alan Eaton monos…the cabinets are really beautiful, his was in cherry 🍒

I am going to a deep dive into the Forte today, I don’t know why I haven’t done this. I had a pair of Fortes from 1986 that I did the crossover upgrades from Crites Speakers….I still want to leave Klipsch in my rear view mirror no matter what the deal is with them…probably donate them to a charity in this time of shortages in food banks..in my area… |
