tannoy or devore or....

Hi all,

I’m considering upgrading my speakers to something a bit bigger than my tannoy stirling prestige SE, which ive had for about 12 years and i beleive are late 90s vintage. I’m a fan of the tannoy sound, my TV system has 1980s dovers too.

Options I’m thinking about are devore 0/96, fyne vintage classic 12 (apparently surfacing in january), and some tannoy grf memory (1980s vintage) recently popped up on a local auction site. The GRF are probably a bit big, and I can’t hear them first, but they look in decent condition.

I like the presentation of the tannoys, but they are a bit small for the current room, and I'd like something with a bit more bass depth and scale.

Amp is accuphase e280, mostly vinyl from a garrard 301.

Any thoughts? Any other speakers I should be considering in the price range? I’m obviously preferring more sensitive and vibey designs.

My brother owned Tannoy Stirlings and I owned Glenaire Tens. They are both quite pleasant sounding speakers but from my experience the Tannoy magic starts with the 12 inch DCs and 15 DCs in big wide baffle boxes. My suggestion would be a pair of Monitor Gold 15s in a 250 litre Onken or Canterbury style box.

Other than that the HPD 315s in the vintage Cheviots  or that style of box can sound excellent.

I still reckon Accuphase amps as good as they are will over dampen Tannoys. causing the bass to roll off early -which is why some people mention using subs. You need something with a higher output impedance -like a Dartzeel,A Sugden A21 or a push pull valve amp. Then you will get lovely extended bass.
