I recently started following this thread and decided to try a SR Black fuse in my preamp. It previously had an older Hifi-tuning Gold fuse in it. I was initially impressed with the difference the Black made, but once it opened up after about 75 hours, I was amazed at the improvement in sound. I was so thrilled that I ordered two more for my monoblock tube amps. They have only been in the amps for about twenty hours, but I can already hear an improvement. The amps also previously had the Hifi-tuning Gold fuses in them. I am anxious to hear further improvements. Has anyone noticed that after the SR Black fuse opens up, you can listen to music at a slightly lower volume and still get great satisfaction with the sound? I am very impressed so far with this SR Black fuse.
Synergistic Red Fuse ...
I installed a SR RED Quantum fuse in my ARC REF-3 preamp a few days ago, replacing an older high end fuse. Uhh ... for a hundred bucks, this little baby is well worth the cost. There was an immediate improvement upon installation, but now that its broken in (yes, no kidding), its quite remarkable. A tightening of the focus, a more solid image, and most important of all for my tastes, a deeper appreciation for the organic sound of the instruments. Damn! ... cellos sound great! Much improved attack on pianos. More humanistic on vocals. Bowed bass goes down forever. Next move? .... I'm doing the entire system with these fuses. One at a time though just to gauge the improvement in each piece of equipment. The REF-75se comes next. I'll report the results as the progression takes place. Stay tuned ...
Any comments from anyone else who has tried these fuses?

David, My preamp is a tweaked-up AH TP 2.0 and amps are older VAC Auricle Musicblocs with Penta KT88SC for power and Psvane 12au7 drivers. I have several speakers: AZ Adagio, Reference 3a MMC and Dulcet monitors. Cables are a mix of high end companies. This is the first SR product I've had in my system since experimenting with an early model of their speaker cables back in 2002. |
Very nice thing you did for your mother, David. I used to do that for my Dad for his stereo/TV system until he got too old to appreciate the sonic improvements. Are all five outlets in the circuit upgraded? If not, and there are still contractor-grade outlets in line, then you will hear an improvement upgrading all of them, even though some might not be used for music or video. Those not being used for audio/video you could probably get by with improvements with some less costly Hubbell HBL8300 all brass version, i.e. Porter Ports. I have some extra Hubbell HBL8300 I could sell you for $10.00/each. I bought a bunch of these from an electronics surplus store in new York. They are the same as the Porter Ports, but un-cryo'd. They are also red in color so they might not look good with the decor. I installed the red outlets that were hidden behind the couch, chairs, etc. |
I just made an observation that you don't necessarily have to have current top-of-the-line electronics to hear the audible difference(improvement) with the SR Black fuse. In my bedroom system, I have a 1960 Pilot 402 tube receiver and taking out the cheap glass fuse(AC fuse) and replacing it with the SR Black fuse made an enormous improvement. Of course, I have excellent cables and older Reference 3a Master Control speakers but these better cables and high-rez speakers only made it more obvious with the improvements given by the SR Black fuse...pretty impressive. |
Oregonpapa, You are going to love the Von Gaylord interconnects. I have a mix of Chinchilla and 7000s throughout my system, even in my bedroom system and they are the best I've ever had and I've tried a slew of them from many manufacturers. Please make sure you get at least 200 hours or so on them before you fully evaluate. |
I found a thread here on Audiogon that provides a youtube link for a DIY fuse break-in device. Maybe it will help someone who has tube equipment to save some tube life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ud2n7Mut13s&feature=youtu.be |
I have wondered where SR bought their SR Black duplex. I did some googling and found a duplex that looks very similar. Hmmmm... http://www.lowes.com/pd/Pass-Seymour-Legrand-20-Amp-125-Volt-Black-Indoor-Duplex-Wall-Tamper-Resista... |
One of the things that makes me a little nervous, other than the exhorbitant price of the SR Black duplex, is the nickel plating on the ears and backstrap. I have never liked the sound of nickel-plated anything in the audio chain. Maybe their tesla zap, graphene, and UEF coating changes that signature. I recently did a two week test where I took out two Hubbell 8300HBL( non-cryo'd Porter Port outlets) and replaced them with two Afterburner outlets. After two weeks, I felt that something wasn't right. The highs seemed constricted and the overall feel had this strain to it. I put back in the Hubbells and the sound once again had extended highs and an ease to the flow of the music that occurs in a live environment. I am on the fence for now with the SR Black outlet. In the meantime, I am glad that most of the current users of the SR Black outlets are happy with them. |
Nyame, Oregonpapa has mentioned in a few posts how much he likes the Von Gaylord interconnects. I also have a loom of the Von Gaylord interconnects in my system, a mix of the top of the line, 7000s and the next step down( previous totl) Chinchilla. If you'll search the threads, you'll find a few posts I made about the Chinchilla. IMHO, the Chinchilla is the best value in the entire line. Only in a very resolving system and under careful evaluation can you distinguish between the top two interconnects. I have an extra 1M pair of Chinchilla that I would be glad to send you to evaluate in your system. If you like them and want to keep them, I'll work out a great deal for you. If you don't like them, just return them to me. The Chinchillas have large barrels, so you need to have adequate gap between the RCA input/output. The interconnects are arrowed for directionality. As Oregonpapa mentioned, Peter Moncrieff of IAR fame wrote a gloating review about the Chinchillas many years ago declaring them the best interconnects on the planet. It was this review that convinced me to try them. I'm glad that I did. |
