Synergistic Red Fuse ...

I installed a SR RED Quantum fuse in my ARC REF-3 preamp a few days ago, replacing an older high end fuse. Uhh ... for a hundred bucks, this little baby is well worth the cost. There was an immediate improvement upon installation, but now that its broken in (yes, no kidding), its quite remarkable. A tightening of the focus, a more solid image, and most important of all for my tastes, a deeper appreciation for the organic sound of the instruments. Damn! ... cellos sound great! Much improved attack on pianos. More humanistic on vocals. Bowed bass goes down forever. Next move? .... I'm doing the entire system with these fuses. One at a time though just to gauge the improvement in each piece of equipment. The REF-75se comes next. I'll report the results as the progression takes place. Stay tuned ...

Any comments from anyone else who has tried these fuses?

Wig,

I see you were a proponent of Audio Horizons fuses but are planning to try SR-Black fuses. I too am using AH fuses in both my amp and dac and very pleased over the stock fuses. My system is dramatically better in every aspect. I'm very curious of your opinion comparing these newer fuses since you preferred the AH fuses over the SR-Reds.

Wig,

Glad to see your results replacing AH fuses with the SR-B. You convinced me to give the SR B a try since I too am using AH fuses which I thought were already a terrific upgrade over the stock fuses. I can't image my system sounding any better but it's worth the try.

I've been reading this thread since it began and would like thank oregonpapa for starting a very informative and useful topic. It's wonderful that so many enthusiasts are involved and encouraging other members to be open minded concerning fuses. Who would have thought such a "none essential" component could affect sound quality. Most of us have tried different tweaks over the years with little or no changes. Some would call these tweaks "snake oil" but isn't it part our hobby to experiment and get the most out of our systems? I understand some are reluctant to spend over $100 for a fuse but would spend thousands on cables. But as oregonpapa and others have stated numerous times, SR's 30 day return policy is a no brainer!

But I'm really amazed what these black fuses have done to my system. The soundstage opened up, I could hear more detail and greater dynamics. Music can be played at a lower volume and it still sounds great. I'm actually writing this while listening to my system and pause occasionally to enjoy the music like I have a new system.

I was wondering if anyone tweaked their speaker placement due to these fuses. I reduced the toe-in since the speakers throw a wider soundstage. I spoke to Ted Denney many years ago while considering to upgrade to his Tesla series cables. He stated the cables will allow my then Focal speakers to throw a wider soundstage thus reducing the toe-in and he was correct. I guess the fuses are doing the same.

oregonpapa:

I'm currently using SR Tesla Accelerator interconnects and speaker cables. For power cables I'm using SR Copper Element for my tube integrated amp and PS Audio cables for my DAC, music server and universal player. I plan to purchase the Black cables since the Black fuses are now broken-in.
A few weeks ago I gave the SR Black fuses high praises in this forum. I replaced the stock fuses in my Primaluna Dialogue Premium Integrated tube amp and Hegel HD 25 Dac  and was impressed with the sonic improvement on both hi-rez files and ripped cds.

Now that both fuses are fully broke-in with at least 200 hours, I decided to compare the SR Black fuses with my previously purchased Audio Horizons Platinum Reference fuses. I first made sure each fuse was in the optimum direction before any comparisons and let all components warm up at least 1/2 hour.

The music consisted mainly vocals which I feel is important in making comparison. The music included Anita Baker, Sade, Patricia Barber (HD), Diana Krall, Kevyn Lattau, Chris Botti, James Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Eva Cassidy, Led Zepplin and the Beach Boys (HD). I felt these selections encompassed a wide variety of music and recording qualities.

The first comparison was with the Hegel Dac which took around 2 minutes to switch fuses and start up. I alternated which fuse went first so it wouldn't affect my judgement. What shocked me most the SR fuses sounded thinner, less bass and a bit brighter. The AH fuses were smoother and more dynamic.

I followed the same procedure with the Primaluna amp with the same results.  These differences weren't as great as comparing either fuse to the stock fuses but the AH fuses were better on my system. The icing on the cake came listening to James Taylor's 'How Sweet it is' ripped from his Greatest Hits cd. I clearly heard Carly Simon's backing vocals starting at around 1:30 into the song which was harder to distinguish with the SR fuses.

I'm not saying this comparison will be the same with all systems or our listening preferences. One thing I learned over the past 40+ years is synergy between components including cables, tubes and now fuses is the key.

Judge for yourself. AH also has a money back guarantee and Joseph Chow is a great guy to deal with if anyone is interested in AH fuses.

What's so great is the ability to tweak our systems that makes our hobby so interesting plus have forums like this so we can share our ideas and experiences.

Have you tried levels 1 or 2? I'm wondering if the Blacks are comparable to a level 1.

Who here has the Black UEF Power Cord? Now that I've replaced all my fuses with the blacks, I think that's my next step.

The Black UEF Power Cord is a great cable for it's price. It's not as good as the more expensive SR cables but it's much better than their previous entry level power cables. I actually own the Black cable and planning to replace it with the Atmosphere power cables that oregonpapa has highly recommended. If you are interested in the Black please let me know.
