. Brian, . Great posts as always. . Rgds, Larry . |
Ray, . You might even want to think in terms of 300 hours for full break-in plus your opportunity to really come to understand the sound with broken in tubes. . I would also suggest only making one tube change at a time. This makes it a long process since you will have the break-in to go through with each set of tubes (assuming that they are new or NOS), but it is well worth it. . Rgds, Larry |
. Wc65mustang, . Take a hike.... . |
. Wc65mustang, . Have you tried Tung Sol 5881's as well as the 6f6G's? I spoke with Brendan today and ordered a quad of Tung Sol 5881's. . At this point, I still have the Sovtek's that came with the unit. I have one more position to roll after I figure out the best 5881's or replacements. . Did you find a large difference when you changed out the 5881'S and if so what did you get ? . Rgds, Larry . |
. David / Wc65mustang, . Thanks for the advice on the 5881's. I already bought a pair, but will pick up a quad of Westinghouse 6F6GT's. Would Tube World be a good place to get them ? . Wc65mustang, Are you having any microphonic issues with your Grange ? . Thanks & Rgds, Larry . |
. Wc65mustang, . Thanks for the quick response. . I buy 90%+ of my tubes from Brendan for the same reasons. I would much rather pay a premium, get a great sounding tube and have someone that stands behind all that he does than try to save a few dollars and run the inherent risks involved in buying NOS tubes. . I will get a hold of Brendan again and order a quad of the 6F6GT's and let you know how they compare with the Tungsol 5881's that I just received from him. . Do you know of a good replacement tube for the 2 tubes that sit in front of the PX4's in the Grange. The stock tubes are SOVTEK's with the number 6H30(n)-EB. The (n) is a Russian letter that looks a bit like an English lower case N. I asked Brendan if he knew the tube and it was new to him. . Thanks / Rgds, Larry . |
. Mc, . I have a switch on my Grange only that allows me to go from the PX4's to the 300B's so I guess I would fry a pair of Sophia 45's if I tried dropping them in. . I guess I will wait and see how your new 300B's sound and then chase those down if they greatly surpass your Sophia's. . Thanks, Larry .

. Wc65mustang....Thanks for the heads up on the Siemens 7308 replacement for the 6922 position. I will check with Brendan and see what he might have on hand. I might even get them cryoed. . David..... Thanks for the information on the Russian 6h30. Any idea as to where I might pick up another pair? I would like to see what cryoing them might do for the sonics. You never cease to amaze me with your tube knowledge and willingness to share.... . Thanks & Best Regards, Larry . |
. David, . I received my Grange last February and love it. I had swapped out all of the tubes except for the Regulator position (just did not get around to it until now). . I am waiting to see what luck other people have with their upgrades before attempting any changes of caps or adding a stepped attenuator. . I will probably pick up a pair of 6h30's and have them cryoed to see how they fare vs. the stock Sovtek's that came with the Grange. . Thanks again & Best Regards, Larry . |
. Wc65mustang, . Have you had a chance to compare the 300B's to your PX4's yet ? I am curious to hear if getting a pair of 300b's is worth the effort. . Rgds, Larry . |
. Wc65Mustang, . I am getting an incredible amount of microphonics. If I tap the volume and channel control knobs in the front of pre-box (as well as any tube in the pre-box or top plate of the box), I get huge ringing through the speakers. If the system is up but nothing playing on the TT or CD player and I clap my hands or speak loudly, I get ringing and microphonics through the speakers. . The Grange came from Mick with the TJ PX4's and a pair of TJ 300B/n's. I just dropped the 300bs for the first time and seem to have the same high level of microphonics. . Did you get the same level of Microphonics from the TJ 300Bs as you did with the PX4s. . I have a few Herbies tube dampeners on the 6SN7s, 6922s and E180Fs, but not the PX4s or the 300bs nor any of the power supply tubes. Have you had any luck with tube dampeners. . David, please feel free to jump in here. . Thanks / Rgds, Larry .

. Wc & David, . Thanks for advice. . Do the 45's require the same voltage as the 300b's or the PX4s? Can I put the 45's in my system if it can handle both the PX4's and the 300B's ? . Wc, have you ever listened to the 6SN7's in your system ? I just sent Brendan an email ordering a pair of 7308's per your recommendation and a quad of 6F6GT's. Presently, I have a set of Symposium Rollerblocks under both Grange boxes. Was it the Symposium Roller Blocks that you tried ? I will look into the Ginko Rubber Ball platforms. . David, what do you think that the differences between the 6SN7's and the76's might be in my Grange ? . Rgds, Larry . |
