Speakers for Yamaha R-N602

I'm relatively new to this world, and would appreciate some thoughts on speakers for a Yamaha stereo receiver.  I figured I would start simple as I learn what my preferences are.  With that said, I don't want two bricks that sound like garbage.  I realize that I'll likely have to shell out a bit more for something worthwhile.

The space is about 2.5x longer than it is wide - I live in an older Craftsman. Maybe some floor standing speakers would do the job?
