Speaker wire... Diy?

I am new to this, so please bare with me. I always thought 12 gauge speaker wire, bare on each end, was best. But there is Kimber, Nord, etc, that seem to be incrementally better! Can I buy the components and put together my own $17000 speaker wires? If so, where can they be purchased, and which are good enough to be used? Which terminations are best for sound? Which wire? Length? Guage?

Where is the forum for selling on audiogon? I'd like to try some used stuff first
Just bought a Kimber cable on eBay for $10! I'll try it out. But the helix cable looks interesting
WowWee! So DIY cables, people either love them or hate them. Seems like there is absolutely no in between. I myself am a do-it-yourselfer, actually a guitar maker. I'm completely confident that I could put together speaker wire as well as any industry leader. I'm just completely unaware of the materials and theories behind it. Helix cables sound like a good idea. Silver, correct terminals, silver solder, this is all new to me. But I still cannot see paying anywhere near 10 grand for speaker wire...
Ok, one vote for transparent cables. One for helix. anyone else have any luck with do it your self speaker wire?
My Kimber cables came today. I have one speaker run with Kimber, one with regular old lampcord speaker wire. I honestly don't hear any difference. Both ends of the kimbers are banana clips. They just slide into the hole, yes? Not into the hole in the threaded post?
Hhhhhhhhhhh... Anyone else not hear a difference between (brown/black 4 wire) kimbers and regular old speaker wire? I will say, the radio stations are all a bit staticy where I live. Maybe I should pair my CD player with the system? Anyone have any thoughts on this?
gentlemen, that is great, you're very funny... But do you have any opinions on the question that I posed here? Thank you for hijacking my thread with your hilarity, much appreciated. But if we could get back on track...
Elizabeth, thanks for the info. I only paid $10 each for them on eBay. They are 4' long. Is Kimber known for breaks in their cables?
No, thank you, the seller was a guy who used to own a hi end audio store. Outside of denver.
They look good, no cheap qualities
There are a pair of Galileo SX speaker wires for sale on audiogon right now for $17,500
This isn't to pull any chains. I'm interested in getting music to sound as good as possible.
