Dealers are not making the profit margin on the few new "good cd only transports", that they can make on the multitude of streamers out there. Whenever a streamer (doesn’t matter what) comes to my place for an a/b shootout, it can’t match the CD transports dynamic range, using the same MSB discrete dac level matched, this is as I’ve mostly stated, different compressed releases being streamed, as my cd’s are the best DR ones released (usually the first), http://dr.loudness-war.info/ or it "maybe" that the streaming company compresses to stream. But if the CD with transport is recorded to a streamers H/D then replayed that’s another story, it’s a lot closer, almost undetectable. Cheers George |

It’s the same as streaming movies, even though they say it is, the streamed picture and sound never seem to look or sound as good as playing the physical medium dvd or blu-ray disc.

You may find this will be better than all of them. Naims new $25-30K flagship Reference R2R Multibit ND555 + power supply, network player still using the PCM1704 dac converters. http://www.theaudiobeat.com/news/naim_nd555.htm Cheers George |
Having music free of any compression, gives you more space to listen to your music louder, and your brain likes it, and enjoys the building crescendo's, as then it's not so relentless and fatiguing that you have to turn it down if it were compressed. Like I said above, the only time compression works for music, is when its not the main consideration to be listened to, when it's a silence filler, noise masker or earbud/ear-drum saver. 1: dinner parties 2: background music 3: in lifts 4: when your on the phone 5: not to blow up ear buds or your ears 6: and to stop the wife from saying turn it down during crescendo’s 7: in the car so the road noise doesn’t mask the low level parts.
8: late at night when everyone else asleep.

Compression is also a good thing when listening to music casually. Yes this is so true, the only times are when: 1: dinner parties 2: background music 3: in lifts 4: when your on the phone 5: not to blow up ear buds or your ears 6: and to stop the wife from saying turn it down during crescendo’s 7: also in the car so the road noise doesn’t mask the low level parts. Think of it this way, what sounds in real natural life are compressed? NONE! So why do it to our music when we want to listen to it seriously in all it’s dynamic wonder??? Cheers George |

I guess my question should have been more pointed: how do you know what mastering you are getting on a streaming service? You don’t, they usually go with the latest, which unfortunately most are more compressed than the originals 10-20 years ago. That’s why I don’t stream or download, I stick with the silver disc. Just for interest have a look at Adel 21 on the DR website, I really liked it in the car on the radio.
I bought the cd played it once when I got it on my home rig, and was shocked how compressed it was, and couldn’t send it back quick enough. http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list?artist=Adel&album=21Cheers George |

same or better if higher rez files. If your talking DSD, it sucks just like sacd did, compared to PCM/Redbook 16/44 or 24/96 and if it ever pulls it’s finger out DXD. Cheers George |
For this reason, I think it’s just a matter of time before CD makes a come-back, similar to vinyl.
Hope your right, as I will not take a backwards step. Cheers George |

You misunderstood me
Sorry yes I did, teach me to measure twice and cut once. Cheers George |
@georgehifi "Why is the Linn CD12 sounding better than their downloads?"
I didn't mean Linn's downloads, I meant the downloads the owner of the HD servers with downloaded music on them they bought to compare to my Linn CD12. Cheers George |
+1 same for me on my system Linn CD12, I’ve yet to get a better 16/44 or 24/96 from recorded downloads when owners bring them around. Even the owners start making excuses, that don’t ad up, why the Linn is sounding better than their downloads .

That is why Hi-res does not garantee you anything. There are also many poor DSD and MQA recordings as well. You can get the best version with the highest DR if you feed the Artist and Album name, in to this, and 8 x out of 10 it’s the earlier releases that have the highest constant DR. Click on the one with the highest DR, get the cat no. and go buy the cd for $2 s/h on ebay, forget the re-mastered or downloaded that’s always a flip of the coin if it’s compressed of not. This Supertramp is not typical, but gives you an idea, what version to look for. http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list?artist=Supertramp&album=Crime+of+the+centuryCheers George |
