Sony TA-ZH1ES

Has anyone tried this unit solely as a Desktop DAC to powered monitors?

If so, I would like to hear your impressions.

Yes, I use preouts to powered momitors and the remote to control the volume

It also has a set of analog RCA inputs which I plug my Bluesound node into and it makes that sound better too.

Yes, I have this unit installed in my HT and have tried it connected to my Paradigm Active 40 speakers. As a DAC it is crystal clear and as a preamp connected to the active speakers I can’t hear any type of coloration, pretty much transparent in my rig. I like the ability to use all the different inputs and outputs. My favorite feature is the DSD remastering engine and it works as advertised. I have A/B it with all typs of files ranging from Spotify streams to hirez PCM, it makes it sound smoother every time. The remote is also handy, nice size and made of metal. The other nice thing is you can build a system of matched components around it with the Signature line. It is an FPGA DAC proprietary to Sony and for my taste preferred over the ESS and AKM dacs which lack the Sony's more analog like smoothness.
