Sonic impact: Step-up/down transformers

Just curious of your opinions on what sonic impact, if any, a step-down transformer would have in a hi-fi system. Ex: purchasing chinese-made equipment is always more economical directly (even with their outrageous shipping fees). My only concern would be the voltage conversion and its effects on overall sound.
