Some tables have soul and some not

Why is that? Do you think it is always very subjective?
Say, Nottingham Spacedeck does have it and SME does not even if in some respects SME can be called a better or depending on model much better table.
Thoughts, opinions, name callings ?

Dear Nandric,
may I translate. I think Rok2id means he prefers Tango or Foxtrott after having had a Whiskey...

the Dijlas joke is good! and this was very real I can assume.

just returning from vacation in the so called paradise which turns out to be a paradise as long as you have not been there :-) - looks like the TAS writes and others followed the same approach just ignoring what could be better.
Everyone may live in his own prefered world maybe surrounded by boosted LP 12 updates. I went a different way and I do not feel it was completely wrong...

Yes, the world seems to be populated by more and more simple minds. Frogman, we have a hard job convincing all these fools. Is it worth an effort? I do not think so. Maybe we are sometimes too tolerant, also with participants on this platform which are not interested in exchange of opinions or learnings but only to spill out stubborn or agressive short remarks without content.

Dear Geoch,

You are pleading for taking responsibility. Yes and No. I agree that we will never succeed in creating a brave new world or a Futurum II. I am pretty happy with the current condition allowing us so much freedom as it has never been in history, also beause of reasonable politics, of the internet, the new media and the opportunity exchanging ideas with people we would never have met (virtually) in our lost small worlds. But do I need to argue with crude opinions showing that someone never started to "open his soul" or if he looks for other aims on this platform as we are looking for - e.g. as a hard seller in the wolf's disguise. Yes I have very clear requirements for "living here on Audiogon" and if you may look at it my pleadings for keeping some basic standards is a kind of fighting. Maybe I got a bit tired. And yes thanks for letting me know.

Maybe it is also because I meet more and more people (on platforms too) always transporting the same BS again and again. You know as good as me when repeating this stuff again and again people tend to believe...

On the other hand we should not start joining manipulating parties or following church leaders. Most people are looking for being guided. That's a fact. But one should always have the will to decide how far he is going. The other extrem position becoming sarcastic or fighting against the industry again and again doesn't help so much either maybe with the exeption for the one carrying the banner. We do need manufacturers and magazines and we need to accept they have their own targets. Why not - as long as it is clearly expressed and separated from religious tendencies. In this thread we have seen that some of the writers in US magazines followed directions in the 80 and 90 ies which are hard to understand from a today's perspective and it is just great that some of us are able to sound this "here".
Nevertheless taking a position is always more difficult than riding the "critical horse".

"Each his own" does help stopping sensless fightings on positions which are overcome. You cannot bring everyone under the Pope's wings. And I doubt that e.g. the natives on some islands in the so called paradise in Hawaii are happier today because we sent them clothes, tried stopping them in making music and dancing.

Variety is good and soul is not so bad too...

thanks fo stimulating and motivating me Geoch. In this Thread a lot of valuable information is being made public.

BTW I forgot to mention I am pretty sure that some TTs have soul and some not as I expressed in the "Accurate Speed Thread". I would never go for a neutral sounding table providing no emotional spirit on the soundstage. I know and when listening to some systems I realize that the TT has no soul - which is a dead one - I usually tell people not going for buying the next soulless version in the next year but invest better on real gear.

I also know people who are hunting after souls in their laboratories putting labels like distortion on it...
Inna,
I played the Miles Davis "In a Silent Way" Master Copy on the Studer A820 this weekend. My friend from Paris was somehow impressed how it sounds on Tape. Natural was his first word. Also Classical Master Copies sound pretty good but I don't own many. Maybe we could ask "some RTRs have soul some not?"

Rok2id,
ha ha, I like your model of the world somehow because it is simple.... Of course the Americans always pay the most but they know how to get the most out of everything. So it is quite a good balance from my point of view. Religion is a matter for itself. You cannot convince an atheist to run on your "religion ticket" but are all Europeans atheists. Unfortunately not, ha ha... I hope you get my irony.

Dear Nandric,
I just returned having spent 4 weeks in the US.
My impression is that people tend to become a bit more aggressive or let`s say less patient with the rest of the world and also with their own government. As you know military is one of my hobbies (now passive, on history and consulting only). I just learned that the US forces withdraw about 15000 people from Europe due to cost reasons most properly. And I think they are right. They need to reduce expenses as the European armies too. But you have seen what this means when the Russian forces went back to their barracks in Russia 1990. The Russian government had to create new jobs and opportunities for soldiers and military civil personal. This is quite a challenge doing so.
So maybe our friend has found a new job here :-) now kicking our ass...

I forgot Nandric,
foreign and national US debt is just a matter of perspective. When you ask US citizen they usually will tell you that they fear more the European debt...

Dear Nandric,
the debt issue was ironic - at least the perception thing. You were too much on the war trail motivated by Rok2id ? Of course your statement regarding this issue is totally right.

Dear Rok2id,
I just returned from Pearl Harbour having learned that some 50.000 US army and marine staff are working on the islands. 188 ships in the Pacific Fleet right now!. This is nearly as much as the Romans had :-) okay we forgot the other half of the world...

Dear Inna,

Tapes are wonderful but very costly. At the moment I watch the "Tape Community" seeing that quite an amount of really good Master Tape Copies (not 2nd and 3rd ones) are entering the market for lower prices as it used to be three years ago, usally Jazz and Rock copies.

It will always be a niche in the audiophile's room but a very nice one.

I happened to align my old Ortofon-Stereo arm much better now, taking into account some forgotten recipies from the 50 ies and 60 ies of the last century. My friend advised me. My god, this combination - EMT and Ortofon - has soul! I am not saying it to praise myself but giving a hint that it is worth a try ending up with a perfectly adjusted EMT idler. I also do understand that people like the Garrard 301 cause it has soul too - even if it bears some limitation. Unfortunately most of the modern concepts lost their soul somewhere on the "distortion tooling bench".
Dear Nandric,
I do understand your national pride. But looking back to the dark times during the Bosnian war isn`t it better right now. Okay not everything solved but it is developing into a good direction also for Serbia.
Using military power during a controversy is always the last measurement but sometimes it is necessary. Look at Libya.
Military personal tend usually to simplifying which is sometimes necessary to keep their motivation. You may not reach a soldier by philosophy.

Dear Geoch,
I have highest respect for your freedom activities but we need talking about these historical events. Otherwise people forget. We in the Western countries now live in peace but there are many problems around the world and some countries like Russia and China try to block UN initiatives all the time. OK this topic is a bit distant to Inna`s soul but better than prostitution...

Inna,
Killing people is never good. If you look at Syria at the moment (just as an example) what is the best doing right now? When the world looked at Bosnia when the war started what was the best to stop it? It is always a question when and with what kind of measurements you`ll reach peace (your own words).
Prostitution and drug abuse (or a mix of both) is also very bad and I hope we see severe measurements from our country governments stopping this.

Inna,
I forgot love is a very important word -good you mention it.
I do not speak Bavarian so maybe there is a special word for it too...

This week the security conference starts in Munich just vis a vis of my office dealing also with the Asian challenge in the next 20 years. Maybe this will have some impact on our future too.

As all around my office barriers are erected to secure protection for the participants (not the mental barriers some people put on themselves) I will go sitting in front of my turntable enjoying the soul of peace...

Inna,
you're right, indeed this weekend it will be the Continuum. I have always something to improve or to change a little on my TTs. Maybe this is the thrill. But I know others might not understand this. Just having let's say a complete SME table with SME arm and believing I am a happy man would not satisfy me. Some people told me why do you have five TTs with 12 tonearms? - we only need one each! My reply was: This is fine for you.

I prefer emotion, why not discuss a little emotionally without bringing the other down. I liked the discussion we had before some guys left the theater.
we are learning as you do with the Bavarian language. Most people in Germany cannot understand a word if a real Bavarian uses his tongue. I am often in Texas and the dialect overthere is a bit similar... or am I wrong?

Marakanetz,
I also do not understand why the US went into Iraq for the 2nd campaign. Of course it was a tyrannized country but ...
In Bosnia the Nato intervention did support peace efforts - sorry Nandric - but this is a historical fact. In Afganistan I learned that different countries try to occupy the zone of influence since 150 years. What is the difference to Tibet? And politicians in Germany told us the Peace of the World will be defended at the Hindukush.
you're right in many cases interests or misleading political concepts have some impact on so called peace keeping activities. Henry Kissinger received the Nobel Price for drawing Cambodia on the war table.

But being a SuperPower or to tag it differently: the last remaining SuperPower - the US has not the freedom to stay away like the Germans did in Libya.

"every time I said good morning or Morgen they always replied with AUSLÄNDER RAUS"

this is, Rok2id, good tradition in Germany. Ausländer raus ( foreigners should leave) is a clear message. I say it every morning to my wife, she is Vietnamese...

Inna,

why should Marakanetz leave to the Netherlands? In the US he has much more freedom, belive it or not. Besides of that I learned that 5% of the US population has contact with drugs. If he wants he is not alone.

My current favourite is the EMT R 80 with the Ortofon RMA 305 tonearm.

Dear Geoch,

"two of the most critical achievments was the European Union & Nato"

I do understand European Union in your case but why Nato?
"All we need is love" doesn't work all the times. Remember Chamberlain.
Or imagine bringing 1000 hippies (not Marakanetz) at one place. What do you think happens after 100 days...

agree that Marakanetz will not survive in the Netherlands but maybe in Marakesch :-)

best & fun only
agree Inna it is a lot talking about military but also about political and military strategy with two aims, keep peace on earth and keep the US dominance. What we learned from history is that in most cases US dominance wasn't the worst - at least in Europe. There are other examples which didn't work out well.

As the US governments's strategy switches to Asia, most dominantly to China - maybe also trying avoiding the same misleading assessments the Rousevelt administration did at the evening of the Pacific War - we will face a new world order in the next years besides of the Arabian Theater: Asia & China & the United States. We should prepare ourselves in Europe that our role will be not only small but more or less a kind of second row diplomatic one.

Dear Nandric,

I didn't say anything bad about your second motherland "The Netherlands", I just said maybe in the case of Marakanetz he has more freedom in the US. I meant if you look at regulations, financial burdens and so on we are facing in the EU.
I know that among Europeans a US bashing is very popular, or at least a bashing against power. You know best having travelled a lot and having seen many cultures that a working society needs some regulations - we in Germany are world champion in this subject - and maybe in the Netherlands they had the less regulations in Europe. Sweden has changed a lot and I guess in the Netherlands too. Maybe we cling to old images of the 90ies.

Dear Nandric,
okay the discussion was a bit hard and sometimes simplified and of course a bit provoking - but this is the most interesting thread since a long time.
It shows that we are able to discuss relevant matters of our life and not always avoiding topics of religion, nations, societies etc. I got the feeling all around people are educated to swallow, not expressing what they think and feel. it is getting a bit boring dealing all the time with superficial arguments rather than with reality. I liked Marakanetz statement and exuse for abusing him as a place marker for some topics. Of  course we don't have to agree in the end and it is your right defending your mother countries as it is Geoch's to retreat.
Inna moderates in a very good and intelligent way - which is not easy with such tough cookies...like we are, or?

Tpreaves,
the only unrailed guy are you. It is about such people always keeping their mental barriers very narrow to feel comfortable. You don't need reading our discussion.

these are the ones calling for cencorship. How i love this. I thought we have left those times behind us.
Tpreaves,
may I ask you also a simple question:

what is your contribution to this thread's topic so far?
Inna,
I had started a thread about what are the best TTs. Of course best is relative and may mean something different to different people. I have watched that some guys really love their baby. It might be not the most musical or really highly praised TT by the critics but there is something special regarding their TTs they will never say good by to these tables.

If you develop such a personal relation to a "simple tool" and we would ask those aficionados about their preference I am quite sure they would come back and tell us their TT has a kind of personality or soul. No I am not on drugs...

I am rather keen in learning which TTs definitely have NO soul?
Who can help me?

Inna,

I learned this is the usual way:
while some guys are participating in a thread there are others who like reading only. Just fine!
But some very special individuals show up every 30 posts, put their ass on the table and declare: You have forgotten me, I am important! I cannot add any substantial argument but I wanna tell you what you are doing is crap, useless, BS, needs to be cencored, I will tell it daddy... otherwise I feel uncomfortable or I need to show it to my gang behind me that I am the "mighty overruler".

oh yes, come on go back into the kitchen, drink your milk shake and tell it daddy - and feel better. Yes you are important...

Maybe we just ignore these wonderful people...

Dear Timetel,
in your case you may show up again after 29 posts. What is your favourite shake?

Dear Nandric, Inna, Rok2id,
Don't forget that learning a language enabels you to understand the culture of a nation or region much better. Having learned no other language sometimes supports building up mental barriers.
