Some advice on Vintage McIntosh C11 and C22 Phono Stage

Greetings all,  longtime member, but first time poster,

I'm curious on opinions.

I have three or four rather nice vintage HIFI setups at home-

Two of which are based on Vintage McIntosh tube equip.

One is a rebuilt C11 that goes into a Pioneer SF850 crossover into a MC240, and a pair of Sony TA2000 amps, driving a pair of JBL sovereigns - with the big LE15a, 375s on a big wood horn, and the 077 slot tweeter.

The other is a rebuild C22, into a Marchand 2way xo - with a pair of MC30s driving the 2441 and 077 with an upgraded passive XO, and bridged MC2200s on the 15" - its not the LE15a but a more modern driver (I think the 2447j) but i can't recall now,  its the one with the mass ring on it.

Anyhow - my question really revolves around the Phono Stage of those preamps and if they are any good - or if I should really consider outboard phono stages - and if my amps/speakers are revealing enough to justify that.

My tables are as follows.

I have a pair of Thorens TD124s and both are setup with pretty good vintage tonearms - on one, I have a London Reference cartridge, and on the other a modded 12" ortofon arm.

Both preamps can handle the high output of the London just fine - but i'm not sure if an outboard phono stage will benefit me - if my speakers aren't revealing enough to justify the cost.

On my 2nd table, I'm considering a MC cart - so now I have a decision to make...

MC and SUT into the McIntosh's phono stage? Or a MC cart into a dedicated Phono Stage - and then into the Phono? or an AUX input?  I guess I'm not sure how the phono stage actually works.. if it boosts the signal to Line Level, or if you still need the gain and 47k impedance of the the Phono input -

I guess i'm looking for several answers here - and I'm not opposed to modding the phono stage of either Preamp, as they are both rebuilt now and have very high quality caps and stiffened power supplies - so they only look "stock" from the outside"

Any advice is appreciated!

Think preferred, not better.

I did not prefer the Phono stage of my McIntosh C28 SS preamp. I do prefer the Phono stage of my McIntosh Tube Tuner/Preamp mx110z. Love it.

MC: I recommend going low output MC to SUT, then begin with the existing Phono Stage in existing preamp.

SUTs are Passive, simply transformer windings, should be no change in sound, so your existing MM Phono stage ought to sound the same, it is the cartridge's sound that makes the difference.

Buy used, vintage, or new SUT, if new, get RETURN OPTION.

Next, try a new separate Phono Stage, it will need to do RIAA eq and signal boost up to line level to Preamp.

Buy phono stage from a source with RETURN OPTION.

SUT, Options?

Considering new cartridge, and plan for future MC cartridges, I always recommend a SUT with optional settings (various magnification xFactors/various impedances.

I chose Vintage Fidelity Research FRT-4 (pass, 4 x factors, 3 tonearm inputs

I see the Entre 100, black or silver with similar features

When you get your short list of MC cartridges, ask again for opinions here, and then ask opinions on your short list of Phono Stage and SUTs.

The SUT technical factors need to have an option that is good for your chosen cartridge
