Small room electrostat/ planar speaker?
I'm wondering if anyone has seen something that approaches the coherency and speed of the 1.7s that would work in an 11x12 listening room? I'd like to keep the cost limited to $4k if possible.
i wonder who keeps saying you cant make good bass in a small room? cars make great bass, headphones make great bass, yes a bigger room is advantageous but good bass is very much an option in a small room. that being said, I like the suggestion of the newform research even tho they arent made any more, and would also suggest some red rose ribbon monitors or adam audio folded ribbons. |
Alta Audio Solos are excellent small room, low to moderate volume speakers IMO-single driver & deals can be had online now-I have them and love them with my Temple Audio Bantam Gold amplifier. Have not listened to the Audience 1 + 1 v2+ but have read great things (Quad-like) about them & have (very) high hopes. Also, the KEF LS50 Wireless; with DSP they are time & phase "accurate"-ditto above-have not heard yet. Maybe best of all are my Ohm Microwalsh talls-Amazin! |
Still musing on this, Maggies are hard to shake. Tried a pair of LS-50's on a lark, nice little speakers but no real low bass and ported cabinet design made frequency response quirky. Possible candidates at this time include Spatial Audio M3 and Zu Soul Supreme. Finding that to improve I would need a lot more class A wattage than the class A/B Hafler provides whereas with a more efficient speaker a better amp would be easier/cheaper to solve. |
I have had dozens and dozens of speakers. I’ve had Magnepan LRS’s for a few months now and I want some 1.7i’s really bad. I absolutely love the Maggie sound and am not sure that I will go back to conventional box designs except for secondary setups. My Maggies displaced some $5,000, transmission line towers with Seas Excel Drivers. The maggies aren't as refined and don’t play loud but when comparing them, everyone who heard the 2 speakers preferred the maggies over the $5k floorstanders. |
@tablejockey , theopjust responded today…. I know its originally an old thread but the op chimed back in. |
