Should I add a PS Audio Digital Link III to my system?

A family friend has a PS Audio DL III that he isn't using and has offered it to me at a low price. I'm wondering if any of you think this would add to my system.

My set up currently from source is:
MBP - usb or BT aptx / Xbox one s (Pangea-AC-14SE MKII)- Optical
Rotel RC-1572 (Pangea-AC-14SE MKII)
Canare XLR L-4E6S
Rotel RB-1552 MKII (Transparent PC w/ Furutech FI-11 G - Male & IEC)
Canare 4s11
JBL 4311s
Transparent Audio - Powerwave (2019) (PS Audio xStream Plus)

So basically wanting to know if the built in DAC (AKM premium 32-bit/768kHz) on my Rotel RC-1572 will perform better or worse than the much older (TI PCM1798DB 24/192) in the DL III. My guess is that the DAC in my Rotel will still be better but I also follow the idea of separate units doing their own task better than integrated.

Can’t you borrow it and find out?

If your other DAC is better, return it and thank them for the offer.

I use a PS Audio Digital Link III, yes it is ‘old’, but sounds better than either of my two built-in DAC’s, so all digital sources are fed to the PS Audio instead, (CD’s, streaming and server files).

I wouldn’t get too caught up with the processor make or model. That TI was a former Burr Brown chip. But, as Paul (PS Audio) has always noted, it isn’t the processor as much as the output circuitry/stage that has a more significant effect, and that is where Paul concentrates his DAC designs. The Digital III has a Fet based output, which IMO is a good thing.

Try it, see if it is an improvement. As it is a family friend, you may get a very good deal on it (I think I paid about $325+/- for mine). There are better DAC’s out there today, but I’m happy with mine, for the time being.
