Room placement for Lawrence Audio double bass speakers.

Hi Kenny,

I'm not sure if there have been any responses to your question... perhaps not. I have the LA Violin SE's. I know there is a big difference btw the Violin and the Double Bass, and I would love to hear the DB's!

But to your query; As the Violin, and perhaps the DB, is ported on the bottom, I've found them to be a bit less sensitive to placement in relation to the wall behind. Yes, more space helps, but the sound stage doesn't seem to become congested quite so easily. 

Regarding tilt, I found the speakers to be a bit more 'right' if I tiled them forward a bit. My general listening is either far away, about 20' or if I'm in the central chair, I sit fairly low, so perhaps that also supports the slight tilt forward posture. My room is about 12' x 24' and open on one side, so not an enclosed box. 

I know that Terry London replaced his Cellos with Tektons, but in discussions with him, he indicated that a friend of his with LA speakers also found a bit of extra forward tilt helpful.

Thank’s for your reply,I ended up with a negative 1.2 degrees of tilt back with the baffle first set at level or 0 degrees.
Also the toe in amount and the 0db or +1db switch on the rear fireing ribbon also are in the mix for the overall positioning to get the very best from this speaker.

You will know when you get it right turning good sound into great sound.

There’s not many of us LA owners as a whole and there’s only been 4 to 5 pairs of DB’s ever shipped to America.

I bought mine as a like new demo pair from one of four remaining Lawrence dealers here.They don’t market here at all and mainly sale in Europe and Asia.

Interesting. I think they are wonderful speakers. I replaced a pair of GamuT Phi 5 Mk ii with them... so another brand of speakers that almost no one has ever seen or heard.... I do wish they would put a bit of effort into getting a better public profile, but we all wish that about the stuff we like. 

There is a dealer in the Okanagan, here in British Columbia and I think he has a pair of D Bass' in his room. I also know that there is another Devialet owner (like me) who has D Basses and considers them one of the fines speakers he has heard... he is in Europe, though. 

The rear tweeter is a great addition to the speaker that have that feature. It makes the whole spatial sense different, and better.

I agree the rear firing ribbon is a great addition to the LA speakers and really does open up the whole spatial sense for the better.IMO.

I took a look at your system page and really like the look of your Violin speakers tucked in there,just a really sexy looking speaker that I have no doubt you really enjoy.

I don't have any experience with these particular speakers but speakers that are ported at the bottom in general sound better when placed on a solid platform as opposed to carpet. Using something like a large ceramic tile could be a cheap way to experiment. 

Yes,I have them up on 1.5 inch solid oak platforms,I had to wait about a wk till they showed up.

I should have clarified,but these speakers are ported on each side very near the bottom of the speaker and not directly on the bottom.
But they do need some breathing room and I can’t detect any port noise at all like I’ve heard from other speakers in the past.

Has anyone used sub-woofers with the double bass? and what's your thoughts?
