Repair shop in New York

My dad fixed TVs and stereos for a living, so I know how difficult it is to get a good technician to fix equipment.

Years back, I had two Marantz receivers (2216B and 2240) repaired by the Soundsmith in Peekskill.   Excellent work, but costly.

I hand carried the receivers up to them.  Didn't trust shipping.  They are about a 1/2 mile from the Peekskill train station.

Maybe a day trip on a weekend sometime in the future. 
Meanwhile my backup, a Nikko 1219, will be on duty.

Everything seems to work again now - not sure what the issue was,

Random. I wired everything the same.

I’m suspicious that there’s a weak contact or something inside that’s acting up every so often. I may still getting it checked at some point. 
the weird thing though is the pre out/main in: It acts as if it were reversed. I have the sub wired to the pre out. When the coupler is in the off position (pushed in), I get almost no sound on the wired mains, so have to crank the volume up high to hear something (normally that would be deafeningly loud) but I can hear the sub. When I have the coupler in the on position I get sound split/distributed to the mains and the sub - almost normal, maybe ever so slightly muffled/distorted. 
What does tha mean? I’m a bit scared as that seems to be the reverse of what I should do. If I use the pre-out for the sub, pre and main should not be coupled, right?

I’m just learning that if I use the pre out for the sub, the pre and main have to be coupled. I had it wrong.
