Removing Tweeter Phase Plugs

I'd appreciate any experiential advice from people who've experimented with removal of the phase plugs on speaker tweeters, as recommended in the Mapleshade catalog. (Also, what is the theoretical basis for doing this?) For the record [no pun intended], I'm looking at doing this with some new Klipsch RF-52's. Thanks.
