I just recieved my second Planer 3 and it was shipped with the center hub removed. These are not supposed to be removed because it might disturb the special thick lubricant it is installed with at the factory. I put it back together and the belt slips. Replaced the belt and it still slips. I'm assumming the center hub and bearing needs to be repacked. Does anyone have experience with this?
Are you sure that there is no contaminants on either the pulley or the hub? Wipe both thoroughly with alcohol on a clean cotton cloth and also wipe the belt.
With the belt removed and the platter in place, does the platter spin freely or does it bind? If it spins freely, the problem is probably with the belt, which is to say that the belt is stretched and/or contaminated. Measure the belt. If it measures the right size, clean it as well as the pulley and hub. If the belt is too long (more than 5% longer than a new one), get a new one.
Thanks Jim for the info, ive decided to replace the belt although it is new because it is slightly deformed in one spot, probably from sitting,,,waiting to be bought. everything else seems to be ok. I use this table with a kontrapunkt a and it grooooves in a big way. P-25...kontra a....spectral dmc-6....dma 180...= It never sounded this good in the 70s. Thanks again jim
I figured it out. It is missing the single ball bearing that drops in the hole. You then add a couple drops of gear lube and ready to go. It was shipped without. Still turned fairly smooth without. But still too much for the small motor suspension and belt. Should have bearing at weeks end...
Yes, indeedy, it does need the ball bearing!! Actually, without the ball, I would have thought that the underside of the platter would contact the motor pulley. Maybe that was part of the problem, too.
Faust- You may still get some use out of the belt with the "bump" in it by turning it "inside-out" so it runs a bit more smoothly over the pulley. Let it sit in a drawer for a few months and check it again.
