I do agree with avoiding re-wire, I did go that route and it did change the sound...in my experience it also did some things to the anti-skate and VTF adjustments that I simply couldn't stand...
My stock RB700 - I set it and forget it, it sounds great and this is the one I enjoy over time...
I do recommend getting a Expressimo heavyweight or similar (setting the VTF on the dial to max, which relaxes the spring, and the VTF thru moving the counterweight) - that does improve things in my opinion...
