Record Player to Preamp - Balanced XLR vs Grounded RCA to Phono

I recently purchased a Mcintosh C2700 Preamp and I wanted to see what the best way to connect my turntable to it might be. There are multiple options. I have a MC cartridge and I could go RCA/grounded from the record player source to the MC Phono Inputs on the on the preamp

Or

Would it be better to get a XLR to RCA (W/ground) and use the preamps balanced input to RCA into the record player?

I would listen to each and see which sounded better but I really don't want to buy a $300 wire just to try it out.

Thank you for all of your guidance.

I see you are new to our forum, welcome!  I did not see your system, so it is difficult to ascertain whether a comparison would be warranted.  Beyond that, please return with your observations so we all can benefit from your experimentation.
