Raul Malo, great new album of acoustic tunes

I just picked this up yesterday and have played it about a dozen times. If you are a fan of this type of music you'll love this album. Very well recorded and except for a dated, lame song about atomic power it is a real treat.

Raul Malo's voice is mesmerizing in the same way that Roy Orbison's was and the picking is top notch. I got mine locally at a Media Play but you can also order from the CMH website.

From the CMH Records website.

The velvet-voiced Raul Malo meets a small acoustic string combo on a collection of country and pop standards, and the result is The Nashville Acoustic Sessions, a masterpiece of heartbreak songs and heavenly performances. The Grammy winning vocalist of the Mavericks joins all-star musicians Pat Flynn (New Grass Revival, Bela Fleck) on Guitar, Rob Ickes (Blue Highway, Patty Loveless) on Dobro, and Dave Pomeroy (The Chieftans, Emmylou Harris) on Bass, performing classic songs by Hank Williams, Gram Parsons, Bob Dylan, The Louvin Brothers, Van Morrison, Roy Orbison and more.
Songs:
1. Blue Bayou
2. Early Morning Rain
3. The Great Atomic Power
4. Weary Blues From Waiting
5. You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go
6. Waiting For A Train (instrumental)
7. When I Stop Dreaming
8. Moon River
9. Hot Burrito #1
10. Bright Side of The Road
11. (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons

When I first heard about this album's release two months ago, I was very psyched, as I have been a big fan of Raul Malo and the Mavericks for ages. Raul Malo's voice is absolutely top notch and is probably the best sounding male voice in all of Americana. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the album overall, as I felt that the song selection could have been stronger. Some of the songs performed are just too plain sweet sounding (Moon River; Sentimental Reasons) and were possibly chosen to play up the sweet quality of Malo's voice. I feel that the two strongest performances were where the songs have acoustic roots and the entire group comes together (Early Morning Rain/Lightfoot and You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go/Dylan). The album was OK ... a solid 3 out of 5.
