Question for GEM Dandy Polytable owners...

Hi

Looking for more information due to the lack of reviews on the web.

For those that either own or have auditioned a Polytable/Jelco, what have you compared it to or what did this turntable replace? Do you feel it performs well beyond the price like manufacturer states? What other tables does it compare favorably too, and how would you describe its sonic signature?

Also since I'm a print subscriber, which Stereophile was it reviewed in? This will save me time searching for it.
Thanks!

Thanks, yogiboy. I was able to find that issue. Only problems Fremer had with the Polytable was a slight lack in bass extension, and the fact that it runs slightly fast. And that was without the GEM power supply which sounds like a must have.

Good point, and those two aspects could make me hesitant. OTOH, the Polytable became a Stereophile Class B recommended turntable, and is the least expensive one by a wide margin. So it must be doing a lot right. Julie Mullins' review at TAS was also very favorable. For some of her review she used a Shelter 201 MM cartridge. I have that cartridge too, and it could definitely strength the bass presentation.

Gee, good to know.

A little surfing would have revealed that Fremer reviewed the Polytable in Vol. 39, issue 8 (August).
