Pure Silver Wire

If silver is so good to use why do we not see solid silver speaker cables? Price is not that high- 10ga diameter pure silver 6ft is just under $300. That makes a pair of speaker cables about $1,100 for material. I see the price of some of these cables on the market and $1,100 is a fraction of their asking price.

Do you have experience in designing sound equipment?  Your comments are unusually insightful.

Unfortunately, no!  My dad did not own an engineering shop, so making tonearms and turntables were out of the question.  A dozen research scientists were working on loudspeaker designs at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), which gave rise to many British loudspeaker startups, such as Harbeth, Rogers, Spendor and KEF.  Later you really needed access to laser interferometry laboratories and anechoic chambers to be competitive.  KEF in particular use a lot of computer modelling which does interest me.  That seems like 99% perspiration!

The 1% inspiration would have to have been the brilliant Peter Walker at Quad, with his valve and solid-state amplifiers, and ground-breaking electrostatic speakers.  The mathematics in his published papers are way beyond me!  He was an electrical engineer, through and through.  He famously said Quad left actual listening to its customers.

I own silver speaker cables by ArgentPur and they are the finest sounding speaker cables I have ever owned! Solid silver speaker and interconnect cables are more typically found in the upper end lines of cable manufacturers. (not all silver used in cabling is the same for all companies) And also found in the internal wiring of upper end electronics. If you research various cable lines you will likely find a hierarchy of materials used.

Chiming in with a recommendation for Darwin as well.  Started off with ArgentPur, it was great (I had speaker cable and prototype RCA).  I wanted to see if there was something similar in quality at a slightly better price. Someone on another forum topic had recommended Darwin, I checked them out and tried out one of their demo Truth II speaker cables.

To me, it sounded on par or perhaps even better than the ArgentPur (and they are great, don't get me wrong!).  So I tried some more: IC, power cord; both gave me the same improvements.

That was a few years ago, and I just got the latest delivery (my second set of Enlightenment speaker cables) yesterday.  Across several systems I now have Darwin cables in most.  Power Cords are Darwin and others mixed (TG Audio, Puritan as well).  But all IC's are Darwin (Truth II, Natural, and Enlightenment), and speaker cables are a lot of Darwin: Enlightenment in 2 systems, the ArgentPut in one, and Darwin Truth II (occasionally Black Cat Silverheart, a model created just before thew current line) in one as well.

The Darwin cables are not harsh, though if the recording or gear leans that way it will certainly expose it.  What is non-typical of these is that the bass control and extension is incredible; they are definitely not lean-sounding.  Top to bottom balance is the best I've heard, and the details within the stage that they bring out pull me right into the music.

Definitely recommend Darwin strongly.  Also recommend ArgenPur too like grk above; especially if you can get a good deal.  I found in my systems that Darwin was on par or better for less money though.
