Primare Pre 30 too smooth?

I used to have a Rotel stereoset (with RA-03 amp) that I "upgraded" with a Primare Pre 30 preamp because of its balanced functionality. I use long cable runs that cross power and network lines, it's just the way my room is set up, and from my PA experience I know going balanced is the most efficient way to resist interference instead of buying of making expensive RCA cables.

I loved the clarity, detail and dynamics of the Rotel amp, although it did get on the verge of being harsh especially with rock or metal.

With the Pre 30 everything sounds ultra clean, 'too smooth' or rolled off almost, and I really miss the dynamics and the highs of the Rotel. I'm now considering upgrading my 30 year old Magnepan crossovers to get some of that clarity back.

Does anyone else have this experience with Primare? Is this the "Primare house sound" or just a result from going balanced from pre to poweramp, or is there something wrong with my used Pre 30?

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the smooth clean sound, but the difference going from Rotel to Primare is night and day, maybe a bit much all at once.

primare house sound is NOT too smooth, if anything it is a touch lively

what you have hearing is rotel’s well known solid state grainy hard edge
