preamps without volume knob?

Hi, looking into tube preamps,(arc) and notice some don't have a volume knob. There is a gain adjustment, an attenuation adjustment, but no volume adjustment. I've
searched the archives. Do you use the gain and attenuation
to adjust the volume? Please help this newbe out. thanks.
